I was never a Marine, but I am guessing that at least up until recently (perhaps), the basic rifle training given to Marines hadn't changed much in several decades, and going back to the time when the "gravel belly" generals (i.e., adherents to the main battle rifle/long range marksmanship school of infantry thought) held sway in the Pentagon.

Whereas the main battle rifle concept gave way to the assault rifle concept when the Pentagon finally embraced the latter in the early 1960s, it still sounds like the training doctrine (at least for non-highly specialized warriors) is stuck back in the MBR era.

This story certainly reinforces that idea, and the need for change.

Good read.  Owning a badass rifle doesn't make you a badass... just like flying a fighter doesn't make you the Red Baron.  You MUST practice.  Personally, I think it is absurd that many military people (officers AND enlisted) are too caught up in the general paperwork and management of the bureaucracy of the military that we forget to be (and teach others how to be) soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines (which REQUIRES hours of practice for combat every day)...  Navy/Army/Marine Corps Knowledge Online, anyone?

SOP's are written in blood... usually not the blood of our enemies.

That's a no-shit AAR for sure. Many lessons were learned on both sides after this action. We had to train on the fly to adapt to this asymmetrical warfare.

God bless the Marine Corps.

Great post and lessons!

I've taken pistol and carbine courses at Sigarms Academy and everything he describes in the article is stressed.

I take martial arts and there are a lot of crossover lessons like scanning your environment, keep moving and economy of movement ie. what's the simplest/fastest/most efficient way of doing something.

While reading that, I thought "wait, he took a carbine course and is paralyzed, why the heck did he do that?"

Then I realized the stupidity of my thought, espeically in light of the article- doesn't matter if you are fit and healthy, or living somewhere "safe", or in a wheelchair- that does not make you any less likely to need those skills!
