Since guns are basically illegal in NY what should I do if I get orders to Ft Drum? My options seem like 1. dec statement = end my career 2. go awol 3. there really is no option three.

Bring your Garand.
I must say, with SAFE Act I had to revert to the old girl and re-connected with such a pleasure as I'd forgotten! |

Not trying to be a troll but the thought of PCSing to NY gives me great anxiety and anger. I am all about shooting and hunting as I am sure everyone on here is. It is basically the only thing I do beside stare at the wall when I cant do it IE while being stationed overseas.
Basically for various reasons I will never understand it seems that handguns are more or less outlawed. Bolt my bolt guns are stupid when it's what I am forced to own. I guess hunting shot guns are still ok. I would look forward to the deer and duck hunting if killing anything in the state is still legal. I don't know. I just really really really really really hope I don't ever go to Drum. I think I would rather go to hyperboring Ft Erwin where I am currently stuck at doing an NTC rotation as I type this. |

Anything that looks like a Ruger Mini is fine. Mags <=10 rounds.
Any features ok on anything that's not semi-auto. Tube fed mags have no limit. No NFA stuff at all. Banned features on a semi auto rifle with detchable mag: Bayo Lug, flash hider, threaded barrel, pistol grip, adjustable stock, VFG, muzzle break (yes, break). Banned features on a semi auto shotgun: Removable mag is a no-no. Can't remember about other features. No detachable mag on the rifle... every school shooting feature is a-ok. Hand Guns: Need a NY CCW permit to own. Maybe possible in the future, who knows. Every gun is listed on it. Friends I know have several pages of guns on their permits. Over 40 iirc. So bring the Garand. That's fine. Fudd-looking semi auto shotguns, pump shotguns of any style. Saiga Rifle OK. Minis are OK. M1A is fine if the FH is replaced with something else. |
|
Sign the dec statement and then go AWOL.
On a serious note, if you are an outdoors type you're going to be amazed at the world class fishing and hiking in the area. Hunting is great and you can even do it on post. Lots of history in the area too- Sackett's Harbor and the war of 1812 (plus the place has great restruants), the old barracks where Grant and Lee were stationed, etc. |

I enjoy history. I just enjoy my guns and shooting above all. And the sad thing is I like shooting revolvers the most. To be honest semi autos are pretty boring for me. So far it seems the only revolver I own that I could bring would be my cap and ball. I would obviously bring my black powder stuff because its all old military antique stuff and cool. To be honest about 3/4 of what I own is illegal in the state. On the other hand at Ft Erwin California I could bring AR's and pistols but hunting is like 2 hours away at best. Not to mention Erwin is in the Mojave Wasteland. OMG I hope I never go to either place but geeze it's hard deciding which is worse. My family would also hate Erwin since its 40 miles from the nearest crappy desert town of Barstow. |

My wife and I really want to go somewhere warmer for a change. I spend 4 years recruiting in MT followed by this current 3 year tour at Ft Wainwright, Fairbanks, AK. I mention Fairbanks because its a totally different experience from Anchorage trust me. I see they need a hand gun safety course. I wonder if the fact that I am an NRA certified Basic Pistol Safety instructor will have any bearing. Edit: just scrolled down on that application. No they wont accept the certificate for the NRA instructor course the instructors on the list had to take to be certified to teach pistol safety Also I see you have to release you military medical records. So I suppose anyone with any history of PTSD or anxiety will be disqualified. Do many people in the army successfully get their permits? Or do most just not even try? I imagine that other people than the registered owner are also prohibited from even touching the gun too. |

For a temp move like assignment at drum keeping your pistols is pretty much forget it. The permit application requires references listed that must live in the same New York county as application, best bet is to bring long guns that are New York legal and store everything else out of state until assigned somewhere legal or you retire.
Even for long time New York residents permit application submission to actually getting one runs anywhere from 6-18 months! God help us you would have less hassle moving your stuff to Hawaii! |

It doesn't make a damn bit of difference who you are or what you do, it is NOT going to work out for you here. If you've no other choice, then message or e-mail me and I'll help you out. The above advise is sound in regards to what's a go or no-go. There are a dozen "Sportsman's" Clubs in the area, the most expensive one is like $25. a year to join, none require sponsorship or work days to join/remain. Trap is really big, in fact that's what most of the Clubs in the area are about. FMWR is/was/did hire a Firearms instructor/range flunkie to cover their Skeet field and babysit the indoor Range that's available through outdoor Rec. Coming from Alaska it won't be any challenge adapting to the Winter weather, hunting & fishing aren't as good as out there, but it's better than most other places. It's mostly rural around here, and a good eight hour trip to Manhattan from here, in under an hour you can be in Canada with a passport.....I suppose if it were really as bad as we bitch and complain about, then no one would live here. "Fort Drum: The Army's Best Kept Secret!" (because if they find out how fucked up it is, nobody would come) |

Tube fed mags have no limit. View Quote Is this a correct statement? I thought the limit was 10 rounds for anything, with the exception of .22 rimfire. When they first came out, I was told the "Original" Henry lever action (reproduction) in .44-40 with a 13 round capacity was a no go in NYS. Go figure! http://legislation.nysenate.gov/pdf/bills/2013/S2230 2013-2014 Regular Sessions S E N A T E - A S S E M B L Y January 14, 2013 chapter 189 of the laws of 2000, is amended to read as follows: 21 23. "Large capacity ammunition feeding device" means a magazine, belt, 22 drum, feed strip, or similar device, [manufactured after September thir- 23 teenth, nineteen hundred ninety-four,] that (A) has a capacity of, or 24 that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than ten 25 rounds of ammunition, OR (B) CONTAINS MORE THAN SEVEN ROUNDS OF AMMUNI- 26 TION, OR (C) IS OBTAINED AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THE CHAPTER OF THE 27 LAWS OF TWO THOUSAND THIRTEEN WHICH AMENDED THIS SUBDIVISION AND HAS A 28 CAPACITY OF, OR THAT CAN BE READILY RESTORED OR CONVERTED TO ACCEPT, 29 MORE THAN SEVEN ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION; provided, however, that such term 30 does not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and 31 capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition OR A 32 FEEDING DEVICE THAT IS A CURIO OR RELIC. The seven rounds maximum was later changed to be 10 rounds. PLEASE tell me if I am incorrect about the reproduction Henry. |

The only exception to the ten round limit in modern guns is tube fed 22's a centerfire tube still has a 10 round limit!
|
|
Yep, only .22 is exempted in a tube fed. Centerfire isn't. Similar to shotguns though, a 357 mag tube fed lever action can hold 10 rounds, but 10+ of 38 specials. Same with 44 magnum and 44 specials, or 12 gauge 3" shells compared to those Aguila mini shells. I'd say that it's best to go by 10 round max of the caliber that's engraved into the barrel.

OH and you need the NYS permit to have your cap and ball pistol with the means to fire it. You can have it with no ball or powder and caps. To have all the foo fer all to fire it you need the permit. Just in case you had visions of holding up a liquor store with an 1858 Army.
By the time you get your permit you're months away from the next transfer. At least that's the way it was. I was not aware that the .mil applicants could use references outside of the county. That's in in house guideline anyhow, I presume so the investigator can actually meet with them. I got my permit in another county. IIRC my references said they were never contacted. [shrugs] |

But don't worry, all of these laws prevent people from getting shot. Just ask any mayor of any city around. The laws are working exactly as intended.

I have heard the trigger is pretty heavy on the SCR, not sure if they corrected that. I think you can send the rifle in to Ares and have it lightened.

Speaking of the Hudson River, there is a bridge that goes over it, up in the Hadley/Day area. It cuts fairly narrow and very deep, and someone hung a rope swing down under the bridge. There are lots of flat rocks around, and back when I was about 18, it was like a town park, with all the towels and coolers laid out; very popular teen hangout. There were also several different heights of cliffs you can jump off into the water; and then there are the bridge jumpers. If I can recall, it was about a 60 foot drop from the bridge. Fond memories of visiting that place.

Depending on your MOS and grade, there are always open WIAS tasking slots for 365 day hardship tours (AFG/Iraq/Africa) that "should" get you preference for the follow-on assignment. I would gladly "volunteer" for one more tax free year in the sandbox before I let Uncle Sugar send me back to prison NY. Also, depending (again) on MOS and grade, you might have options for Recruiter/Instructor/DS that would keep you out of the shithole that is NY. Best of luck... you're gonna need it! ROFLMFAO lol. Sorry I couldn't help at the suggestion of recruiting. I already suffered enough through that for four years. I would rather go to drum than back to recruiting ANY day! Deploying on the other hand wouldn't be bad. In fact I would have gladly taken two maybe three deployments over recruiting. |

Well Drum is a continual cycle of Deploy, return, train, deploy, return, train, deploy,..... Are they still that way now? I know for the most part no one is deploying anywhere. Other than to dumb ass field problems with allied countries. I thought it was pretty funny when everyone was in an uproar over who was going to go to japan and korea for pacific pathways. It was pretty funny because I think all of them had thoughts of beer and hookers dancing in their heads. Then when they got back I asked them how they liked it and both said it was just a stupid two month field problem where they got rained on a lot. I was like "no shit stupid what did you expect?" |

If you like hunting and fishing, you will like the area for that. My son has a house on Chamont Bay and the fishing there is excellent. He works at the base. The St. Lawrence Rive is a great place to fish. Not to mention all the other smaller rivers, lakes and streams in the area.
Plenty of whitetail deer. If you like hunting coyotes, the ones in NY average 70 pounds or larger. Yes our gun laws suck and we have the most corrupt politicians in the country but it is a beautiful state with a lot of first rate year round outdoor activities. The Watertown area, is not New York City. You will find a lot of kindred souls there. If you like snowmobiling Ft. Drum is just north of the Tug Hill Plateau. They can get over 200" of lake effect snow in the winter. Lake effect snow is neat. You get none while you neighbor get buried, All within a few miles. |

There are about two BCTs worth of 10MTN Soldiers deployed between Iraq and AFG right now, and they will rotate out with other 10MTN units when their tours are over. Already did a 4yr stint (standard recruiting tour is 3yr, BTW) in USAREC, which would imply the OP is at least an E-6, and can't figure out how the assignment system/cycle works? out of |
