Upstate winters are a piece of cake. You only get that raw wind off the water from one general direction. We get it from 360 degrees.

Well.... anything west of my driveway is "the city".
Anything north of downstate is upstate.

My late father was from Syracuse. He always marveled at how things shut down here on Long Island with just a dusting. He never got a day off from school due to snow. My grandfather was chair of foreign languages at Central High and my father traveled to school with him. The staff always reported even if the students did not. Ergo, my father always had to go to school.
