Posting from the woods.

After three days I finally saw some sign, very old dried up poop.
I have seen 5-6 piles of poop from various large mammals.
Quietest opening day in 30 years. I think the deer went the way of the jobs.

Let a very small spike and 2 does walk opening day.  Never saw another deer all weekend!  My Uncle killed a pretty decent 9 pointer on Sunday.  This was Otsego Co. between Oneonta and Cobleskill.

Opening day like many was crickets mostly and that includes extended family; didn't see a damn thing but heard shots all around me wherever I went throughout the day.

Dropped a 2.5~3yr old nice sized doe on the 2nd morning; still got a lot more tags left to fill the freezer.

Hehe....  lets not be fooled into thinking I'm hunting hard , I'm averaging about 3 hours in the woods a day.
Finally bumped something out of the thick brush today but never saw it.

Currently posting from my new favorite spot, a little far of a walk but some scrapes and a 4G signal.

I always go for chest/shoulder.

had to run back to my truck(about 100yards away) and get more ammo. :"> my last round that I had with me is the one that hit him and I believe it was in the chest as his shoulder is busted and his lungs were messed up pretty bad. when I got back to where I saw him fall he was still sitting up and I put two more into him(don't run well anymore and was shooting off hand). the last one hit him in the neck and finished him. will know more after we skin him on exact shot placement.

I can't remember ever seeing this many ticks before. Seems like every time i leave the woods this fall, I find one crawling on my clothes or my skin.

Finally got a deer this morning after hunting every day since the Southern Zone gun season opened. Just a spike horn, but I'm okay with that. It's meat for the freezer. Already got him skinned out and the inside loins are marinating for tomorrow's dinner. I'll be back in the woods again tomorrow morning. Still hoping to get a doe or two.

Added a pic of the bruiser.....

DEC seems to think there are too many deer. I have seen one yearling in the woods. Did you guys hear about the bait and kill program in Fayetteville?

I'm thinking there is still a lot of nocturnal activity due to warm weather. However I'm not a biologist and could be completely wrong. We've kicked up a few walking.

This, plus the harsh winter we had last year is making this deer season hard.. I normally kill 2 with a bow and 2 during gun.... Ive shot one with my gun and seen maybe 3 deer all season with in bow range. Cams are full of pics but its all nighttime movement.. I cant wait for the snow that should get them moving a little bit..

My contribution to trying to thin the herd. We took 10 off our farm so far.

The past few days have been slow due to the warmer weather and wind. Hoping this weekend picks back up.

Was there a lot of winter kill last year or something?   I didn't see any deer, relatively speaking. None in a week of hunting, but that's not shocking. But I didn't even really see any on the side of the road at night. I saw two on the ride up on the 20th, off the side of the road in Greene county.  I saw three small does in someone's yard near Milford on the night of the 24th. Other than that, nothing. I was on the road every night, plus the ride home, 10 nights on the road and not a thing.

Though I found tonight there are some around. 50 yards from the front door.

What'ya think this is? Skunk?

Didn't look long enough in the coats pointy regions to be a porcupossum. Besides no local sign of them. (That's pretty much the front yard) of course it don't look much like a skunk either, but at least I see them now and again.  I think it's a long haired woodchuck with no sense of season.

That would be my guess as well, young porky or nocturnal zombie woodchuck.

Looks like this season will be a bust for me.  Tracks a plenty out the back door, but the only deer I've seen are the two I helped a neighbor drag out at 9am on Opening Day.  My other buddy hadn't seen any tail either until a small spike passsd his stand yesterday (he let him go).  Granted, I am new and hunting on a smaller parcel that runs adjacent to non-hunting deer haven land.  The weather has sure been goofy too.  How can I locate better ground for next season?  (I'm in Saratoga county.)  I already plan to get a bow or crossbow to get an early jump on these critters.
