Well, without the NYC libs, there would be less regulation and more opportunity upstate, fracking comes to mind.
We'd also charge NYC for the water they use. And, last but not least, NYC can repay upstate NY for the bailout from bankruptcy in the 70's... I believe this debt is still outstanding. Please, someone correct me if I am wrong. |

A long discussion with an insider explained to me, that the city has never paid back the bail-out. I do not know the circumstances, nor do I know if the debt has been forgiven. It has probably never been collected due to the continued economic strains of the annual NYC budget. Do understand, folks from NYC believe the politics of the state are driven by the balance of the state and not the City and resent that their tax dollars may go to support other communities. This is the feeling of many Manhattanites who are not up on their state politics. City dwellers tend to focus on local politics. |

Municipalities love commuter taxes because it is taxation without representation. The people being hit with the tax cannot take out their frustration at the voting booth so it keeps the city flush with money that they have no accountability for. The latest De Blasio dust up is his argument that the MTA needs to get more state support. To some extent he has a point BUT as always the Devil is in the details. The MTA is a state agency and serves the 12 downstate counties (Bronx, Brooklyn, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Dutchess) where we have various MTA taxes added on to mortgages, sales and payroll. A majority of the MTA board is appointed by the Governor. De Blasio is arguing the state needs to spend more BUT he wants it to go to city projects and the hell with the other seven counties. The biggest problem though is the MTA is a vast cesspool of waste. From various anecdotes I have collected from employees and contractors over the years I would guess at least 30% of the budget is wasted - minimum. |
