I know the buyer needs a background check performed through an FFL, but that's all I know.

What's the actual process?  Do we just both go into a shop and pay them something to check him out, then I transfer the rifle to him?

Or does the rifle get logged into the shop and then they give it to the buyer?

Or can we go through, I dunno, a government office for the background check, and save a few bucks?

What shops or whatever are good for this on the east side of town?  What do they charge?

Thanks!

Also, is there any way to sell the person some spare ammo at the same time (or later)?  I'm always sketchy at the thought of that, but curious about the legality of it now.

You go to the FFL
The gun goes on the FFLs books
The FFL transfers the gun to the buyer through the normal 4473 paperwork process
This whole thing is aimed at capturing as much current information as they can on who owns what guns
You can bet in twenty or so years when they think they've got a handle on 6o-80 % of the guns in NYS they'll be going after the ones they haven't banned by then......

Theres no record keeping on ammo sales as of yet
