Does anybody know if this guy is still around? I think he goes by the screen name semiautoSam on other sites. I want one of his mag-locks.

So we can lock a 30 or 100 round mag into the receiver and not register the rifle until the 0bamination is done away with one way or the other?

No on the +10 preban mag and no one can tell you whether a fixed mag using this device is acceptable in NYS.

It doesn't look like they can even tell us what a "fixed magazine" is, so how can they tell us if this device is acceptable.

I don't think that is the same company. The Mag-Lock is stainless steel and sits flush with the receiver. This one is called Range Mag-Lok. I orders two anyway, not that I have any rifles to put them on

I got mine today too, but let's just say I am not overly excited. The insert is made of plastic not even aluminum, the 10/32 round nut that screws onto the mag catch doesn't sit flush with the receiver. I like the other one much better, it was stainless steel and everything sat flush with the receiver, including the nut. Here are a few pics, you can decide for yourself.

Fixed it!

I need to find someone that will make me this insert out of stainless steel and it just needs to be a few thousandths wider. Right now the round 10/32 nut measures .301, but the insert measures .297. When you drill the insert to countersink the nut it breaks through. It still works fine, but If the insert was say .315, it would still fit in the receiver and be able to accept the nut flush w/out breaking through. Hope I'm making sense.

That looks great. Did you have to trim the end of the mag catch? Drill or mill?

Aluminum would be another good option for the plug.

I drilled out the insert to .302 (letter N drill bit) and cut down the end of the mag catch. If you go back to the original link I posted about the Mag-Lock, there are directions from the manufacturer that say to cut the end of the mag catch to between .800-.825. Here is the link:

Aluminum would be nice too. You could also tack weld that nut to the mag catch for a real permanent fixed magazine, just in case the powers that be say the nut by itself is not good enough. I guess you could always just put a dab of jb weld in the allen key hole as well.

inoperable; or (C) is an antique firearm as defined in 18 U.S.C.

921(a)(16);

(ii) a semiautomatic rifle that cannot accept a detachable magazine

that holds more than five rounds of ammunition;

(iii) a semiautomatic shotgun that cannot hold more than five rounds

of ammunition in a fixed or detachable magazine; or

(iv) a rifle, shotgun or pistol, or a replica or a duplicate thereof,

specified in Appendix A to 18 U.S.C. 922 as such weapon was manufactured

on October first, nineteen hundred ninety-three. The mere fact that a

weapon is not listed in Appendix A shall not be construed to mean that

such weapon is an assault weapon;

I'm not sure if this is the "current" version, or if they haven't updated that site yet, but when I searched the Safe Act summary, it said the same thing.

The way I read it, a detachable mag rifle is exempt and doesn't count as an assault weapon, as long as there is nothing larger than 5 rounds made for it. I think that's where the confusion comes from. I'm not a lawyer, so take it for what it's worth.

5 rounds is fine for me. I would be using this on my .223 coyote rifle and my 6.8 SPC deer hunting rifle. I can only have 5 rounds while hunting in NYS, so that is not going to be a problem for me

That's an interesting question. One might want to considering just about any semi-auto can be converted into a full auto with by adding parts or in some cases modifying existing parts with tools. Yet those semi-auto's are not NFA items... How semi-auto is semi-auto to avoid it being an NFA item?... Is a 20" shotgun legal if it has the potential to be cut down to a 9" shotgun and therefore be an NFA item?

What about your AR-15, with a 16" barrel, with a few tools you could remove that barrel slap a 9" barrel on it(AR-15 Pistol/SBR barrel), that you could easily purchase online. Does that make your 16" AR-15 an NFA item?

Well, I was finally able to find someone to make me the mag locks out of aluminum. I also found round 10/32" nuts on mcmaster.com, which I turned down to .280" on my lathe. I also powder coated the pieces black to give them a finished look. I have no idea if this will qualify for a fixed magazine (don't know why it shouldn't), but it's worth a shot. Here are some pics.

Thanks, let's just hope it is considered a fixed magazine now. I will be using it with a 5 round magazine for hunting.
