Ok quick question. Is it legal to have a rifle on a boat in the ocean while fishing, say at least 15 miles out? Also what are the ramifications of shooting said rifle while out that distance with no one else in sight?

another "local" website has this going simultaneously. some things to consider:
500 feet from a residence
if shotgun, proof you are not illegally waterfowling and whether steel shot required.
12 miles out is international, 3 miles to 12 miles is federal, within 3 miles is local jurisdiction.
Wish I knew the answers, and we both know that we will get a lot of "back in the 50s, 60s, etc.
we did it all the time !"

Loaded gun in a mv applies as far as NYS law. There is an exemption for waterfowling.

Now unloaded is no issue as far as state law. Have no idea what the coasties might do but yea the old mini 14's to protect your fishing turf did happen and people did get locked up for assault, menacing, etc.

Off the top of my head the NYS Marine district (regulations for marine fisheries) is up to 3 miles out. US NMFS regulates farther out. I'd have to look in the CPL for further claims of jurisdiction.

Waterfowl:
From what I understand Steel shot is required everywhere, and anytime you're hunting waterfowl. (including shooting nuisance Geese off the Golf Course).
When Hunting, there is no distance requirement, but you'd better not take a stupid shot towards someone or their property....seems some people get real pissy about someone near their dock shooting "their" Ducks.
As far as I'm concerned, you'd be out of your mind to be out on the water without a firearm. Stowed away there shouldn't be any issue and unless you're snuck up on in the middle of the night retrieval and making ready should not be a issue.

Do you take vitamins?
Is there Vitamin C in Newports?
No, but you can't get a snitch shanked for a dozen oranges no matter how hard you try.

Shooting guns or even having them on board a boat is BAD JU JU! How do I know?

i brought all my guns on our boat to clean them while fishing... and abruptly lost them when an arrant wave capsized the boat!
