Hey guys, my wife and I are looking to get into kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. Does anyone have any advice of where to start, websites, etc. We live in Frisco so have several lakes all around us.

Paddle Point Park in Rowlett; you can rent kayaks and/or SUPs there or bring and launch your own; use Groupon if you rent

you can also rent SUPs at the Las Colinas canals

True, but free shipping on things above $35 (I think) and they even ship kayaks and such for free.

For kayaking, I'd check out Mariner Sails...  They have a ridiculous number of kayaks in stock.  They also do SUP, but it's secondary to yaks.

Thanks for the help guys. My wife and I are going to go rent some a couple times before we decide to pull the trigger on buying anything.

I'll certainly keep this thread alive with updates and pics!

What are you going to be going out on the most?  Lakes (more open water with longer paddling) or narrow rivers?

Texoma has some great spots. North texoma especially, if you don't mind the gators :)

Whats your plan with these kayaks.

For fishing most use a sit on top type of kayak.   Easy to get on and off of, more stable, you sit higher, and many you can stand up on.  Short 10-14 feet and wider 30-39inch, But they are heavier (60lb+), and are slower about 3mph paddle speed.

rec/sport kayaks, you sit inside, sit lower, and you can roll them 360 degree.      The are long and narrow 12 - 20 feet and less then 30 wide.     Tend to be lighter (less then 50lb), and you can paddle them fast very easy 6mph or more.

Yes on rudder.  Makes it easier to run a straight line while paddling.  I would also get a long kayak (14') over a short one.  The short ones are great on rivers, but longer makes for easy paddling. If you are ever down in Austin, try swinging by Austin Canoe and Kayak.  They have demo days every so often where you can try things out.
