Really?? There are No texmex or bbq places in San Antonio. Don't even bother to go there..
If there were any would be better then what you've been having before.

Don't forget City Market in Luling for good BBQ.  Also there's a fourth BBQ joint in Lockhart, Chisholm Trail, that cooks good Que too.  The locals eat there to avoid the tourists.

If Taqueria Aranda's is still open on Military Drive, I would recommend it for lunch.  I haven't been out there in about 15 years but the building looked like it needed to be condemned, which is a sign of good tex-mex in SA.  Taco Garage on Broadway is decent.  If you get up towards Walzem, Cristan's Tacos at Walzem and Midcrown has excellent Carne Asada tacos, but they close at 2pm everyday and they are closed all day on Monday.  If a sit down restauarant is more what you are looking for, I would go to Mamacita's on I-10 in the Medical Center before dealing with tourists at Mi Tierra, but I try my best to avoid downtown.  Just stay away from Taco Cabana and Las Palapas, they are fast food chains, better than Taco Bell, but that isn't saying much.  Mama Margie's if one is nearby isn't bad, better than the two chain places.

For BBQ, try the Smoke Shack on Broadway, or go to Texas Pride on the far east side.  A lot closer to Lackland than Luling or Lockhart.  Fair warning, Smoke Shack has a small parking lot and can get downright packed.  Texas Pride gets busy during lunch, but is fairly calm around 3 - 4 pm on weekdays.  Harmon's in Marion/Cibolo is pretty good too.

Taco Cabana was so much better in the early 80s.

Taco Cabana was better in the 80s.

And so was Sombrero Rosa in the 80s!

We still hit up Las Palapas when we visit and want drive through/take-out.... I hardly used to eat there growing up in SA.

Mi Tierra is still good IMO .. if you're downtown and want something from the bakery its a nice atmosphere and the food is pretty good.

La Fogata good drinks and decent food

San Antonio:
Two Bros BBQ on West Ave.
Rudy's BBQ (original in Leon Springs,  there's one on 151 by sea world too.)
Texas Pride BBQ
The smoke shack (on Broadway)
Smoke house (on Roland)

Los Dos Hermanos (on West Miltary near Lackland)
Mi Tierra's (Cliche)
Mama Margies ( fast food-ish like taco cabana but much better)
The Cove (not just texmex)
Tink-a-taco (mex)
Paloma Blanca (on Broadway, Authenic Interior Mexico)
Guajillos (410 and blanco)
Blanco Cafe (2 locations, Fredericksburg or Blanco) probably the more tex-mexiest of the tex-mex (some actually try to swing more to the Mexican theme than Tex-mex)

Boerne has:
Fritze's BBQ,
the "Meat market" which I think has a new name now (Klein Smokehouse). On Main next  to Jonny's Feed, the old pet store, the new Jefferson Bank, and the New Library
Riverside Market has bbq
Dodging Duke (German, burgers and brew)
Little Gretel (A Czech theme, really good)
El Rio (Mex)
Taqueria Guadalajara
Magues

Bandera:
Busbee's BBQ
Sids BBQ
Papi's (authentic Italian)
Mendoza's (Mexican, Authentic, they even have cactus tacos and horchata)
El Jacalito's (tex-mex)
OST (more tex- than mex-)
Bricks (southern food, great Burgers and anything else)
Mary's Tacos

No firsthand knowledge of this place 2M-Smokehouse but I understand Texas Monthly is going knock Franklins to #2 and this one will be #1 in Texas this year.  Get there early though, apparently they sell out by about noon or so.

I've eaten here Big Bib and while it's not Lockhart BBQ I wouldn't hesitate to suggest someone to try it out for their first time in the area.  The nice thing is they dont run out like some of the other places.

Both of these places are a bit away from Lackland, but in town is still a lot closer than Lockhart...

If you go to the Smoke Shack get the Mac & cheese!

Papasito's on I10 has some darn good TexMex and their bartenders make a damn good margarita. Its a little pricey for texmex though.

Perfect thread, I'm here now. Staying off 1604 and Stone Oak.

Will use some of these recommendations.

@LostX

Check out Big's burgers, 1604 between blanco and huebner.
Two Bro's BBQ is about 10 minutes away down 281 right on Bitters, left on West Ave.
Italian: check out Juliann's on Bitters and West Ave. or Aldo's
Longhorn Cafe
Paesano's
Cover 3
Brickhouse

Beer check out:
Freetail
The Flying Saucer
George's Keep
Cooter Browns
Thirsty Horse
Bombay Bicycle Company
Brickhouse tavern

If El Chapparel is still there on Redland road and 1604, (The location in Helotes is great, the 1604 store is the 3rd location I thnk.)

There's a Mellow Mushroom pizza near you

A little fancier fare you might look at Silo on 1604 or Piatti on IH10 north of Fiesta Texas.

Let us know if you're looking for anything in particular.   There's also a good Sushi restaurant on West Ave called Godai, or you can try Fujiya, or Sushiyama or Nama Ramen.

For general shopping head over to the Rim or the La Cantera shopping area.
