Way Way Way back in the far long ago past, we used to do shotgun qualifications at Camp Swift (outside of Bastrop)
I was with the 2nd Regiment out of Camp Mabry in Austin.
As the Head Quarters, we had "oversight" from the Head Honchos so not much opportunity for fun with guns.
However, we had a Field Expercies and needed to certify on the Shotgun for the Security Specialist Badge.
We have a bunch of crates of "vintage" 60's & 70's shotguns (Winchester 1200 & Rem 870s) that we had to certify - which meant we hauled them out there, shot them, then cleaned and put them away.
I posted the story about how these guns looked like they had been in L-O-N-G term storage since the mid to late 70s...
Some genius put GI Rifle Grease on the bolts... Whick lock to the barrel extension. Which over the years cooking in the dry Texas heat was baked it to an super tough bonded epoxy that bound up every single one of the guns.
You couldn't release the bolt or move the action back or forth. There were SOLID...
We would have been completely screwed if we had taken them to the field for emergency issue.
As the designated unit armorer (and rangemaster too - as a NCO I used to do a lot!) I had the task to strip all of them them all the way down, Clean off all the super gunk. re assemble and then Shoot 10 rounds to certify ready, then strip them all back down and clean them again) for proper long tern storage...
Our issue qualification shells were some vintage Federal High Brass 5's. So, 4 cases of 10 shotguns each times 10 rounds minimum was 400 rounds over the weekend. Ka-Boom!
I met some good friends and had great times in the TSG. I still have my old Woodlands & Alice Gear. (should there be need for a Dinosaur to rise again...)
