...and am looking for a place to stay at while my wife and I attend a wedding in March.

Any recommendations or places to avoid (crime ridden, crappy, flea bags etc?) of the hotel variety.

Going to be a short stay, just overnight before we continue on and drive to Fredricksburg (and if anyone has a recommendation for THAT, have at it too)

Fredricksburg is nice. Sorry cannot help with San Angelo as never stopped there unless to get gas or bathroom on way down to Fredricksburg/San Antonio.

There are a few new Marriott hotels (The only ones) in town that will be centrally located and safe.

Also it's hard to find a completely non safe area in the town if you use a large city standard to determine  what is safe vs not safe.

My wife and I usually stay at the Springhill suites on Houston Harte Expy.

Make sure you grab dinner at Henry's.

Good location ... it's off of Houston Harte (the loop) and southwest blvd next to a Home Depot and olive garden on one side and a dodge dealership on the other

If you and your wife will be having a meal alone ask for directions to one of 2 restaurants called The Grill or Cork and Pig (no it's not a BBQ joint). The Grill will be closer

Is Zentner's Daughter still open in San Angelo?  That used to be the cult restarant 25+ years ago

The daughters location is still open unfortunately.  The regular one closed a few years back.

Twin Mountains is still there and still a good small town steakhouse.
The Grill and Cork & Pig are both good. C&P is pizza mostly.
Also there is a pretty new Twisted Root burger place that was really good and has a great patio.

Julio's for breakfast burritos!

What day of the week and do you want a traditional breakfast, Mexican or some kind of fusion ?

Breakfast will be on a Sunday. May be a brunch depending on what kind of hangover I have.

Prefer traditional ie waffles, eggs ham etc.  My standard rest breakfast is cracker barrel if I pay for breakfast.

Otherwise donuts.

Im genetically predisposed.

Check out Alamo burgers. A short drive from fredericksburg.  They also have a nice place to eat at the airport. I forget the name. We go yo the Auslander and it's good. There are plenty of good places round there.....wineries...a brewhause and restaurant on main.... swing by enchanted rock park or the Nimitz Museum.

We stayed at Home2 Suites in San Angelo in December for a wedding.  It was a very new property and the king suite for $100 was a very nice large room.  The bedroom was an actual separate room, the bathroom was large and accessible from both rooms, the full kitchen and living room area was big too.

Lots of new hotels , bUT I see you found one already.

San Angelo overall is a safe town considering its population , around 90K .
Car breakins do happen, a few robberies do occure but again very low considering population also.

We have our gangbangers but keep a low.profile.

I like Henry's,  Francos on Main Luther King st. is also good.

But, overall I'm not a big fan of Tex-Mex .
For me New Mexico has the best mexican food.

Several new restaurants opened up.in the downtown area, from burgers to steaks.
Lots of pubs downtown also.

There are a lot of shops downtown to look at.
All within walking distance.

If you hit up Mamacita's, start with the queso flameado.  Chorizo and Monterey jack cheese.  They put a small amount of everclear on top at your table and set it on fire prior to serving.    They used to bring it out through the restaurant floor already on fire at the New Braunfels location, but not anymore.

And if you aren't diabetic or in danger of it, order dessert.
