I was there in August and stayed at the Embassy Suites next to the Hilton. We never had a lick of trouble until the last day of the convention which was a Saturday, then we were overwhelmed with pan handlers and taxi drivers who looked like they were from Mogadishu. I couldn't find anything within walking distance that I couldn't live without. Even when I drove around within about 15 minutes of the hotel, I just wanted to get the hell out.

One of my favorite places downtown is 1820 lounge. It's connected to a retro arcade called Joystix. Awesome selection of video games and pinballs to play. Too bad you're not in town next week, for the first and last Friday of each month you can play everything in the place unlimited from 9pm - 2 am for $15.

Some decent bars and restaurants in this area of Main St if you just want to do a bar crawl. Otherwise just check out Discovery Green next door to the hotel. There are often concerts and such going on.

How long of drive is it from downtown? It will be a hard drive down 45. Parking is a chore. Long lines. Leaving is a chore. And a hard drive back up 45. It's a shame because it's pretty awesome, but I wouldn't try it unless you have 5 to 6 hours at minimum, and that leaves only a little time for actually walking around. |
