Gonne be a rough one today folks. Keep your head on a swivel.
Strong to severe thunderstorms will easily fire up across north Texas today with all severe weather modes possible: hail, high winds, and tornadoes. Since the cap is weak and our upper-air disturbance once again coming in negative tilt, storms will not have to wait until late in the day to fire, but they will be at their strongest in the afternoon and lingering into this evening. If you wanna get your feet wet listening to RACES and storm chasers, he's your cheap bastard starter kit. I think I've had mine 4 or 5 years and it's starting to have problems, but it still mostly works. I've got better stuff now, but it gets unplugged from the antennas when the lightening bolts start flying. This guy has all kinds of stuff though, only limited by your wallet. |

Update from the NWS:
845am update - Here are some thoughts about today's severe weather threat.
- the moderate risk is mainly because of the very large hail that's expected. The tornado risk is still there, but is not the primary threat. - forecast is still a little messy this morning with uncertainties about when storms will form and what they will look like. It looks like the wind shear will not be extremely favorable for numerous strong-violent tornadoes, but it only takes one. Don't focus just on the tornado threat, but be ready just in case - we could see showers and weaker storms develop before mid afternoon, but right now it looks like the most significant storms will be after 3 or 4 pm. - we expect scattered storms to form after 3 or 4pm along and just east of a dry line which should be somewhere along a line from Alva to Clinton to Vernon, TX. Storms will quickly become severe. - bottom line: stay alert. Not everyone in the moderate risk area will see severe weather, but if you have a storm near you later today, it will mean business and should be taken seriously. Think carefully about any travel plans between 4pm and 8pm. You do not want to be on the road with severe storms producing large hail. Hail in the most intense storms will be big enough damage homes and vehicles. Watch for more updates through the day. View Quote |

Warm Air Aloft. This warm air pretty much prevents severe weather from being able to form. Storms can form on top of the cap, which is technically "under" it, but they don't fire up to severe levels. We lived there just shy of 10 years (moved to Alaska a few days ago). Frisco/McKinney border. Worst we had (knock wood) was this last bit of hail, pea size, up to nickel size.
That being said, I always hated this time of year. Lost sleep, lost hair, grayed hair, all that fun stuff. Just felt my first Alaskan quake lol. But I grew up in CA, so quakes are nothing new and not as scary to me as tornados. |
