Good question. I hope to find that out this weekend.
I've hunted coyotes all my life, but these beasts are another thing entirely. I don't know if they will come to hand calls, bait piles, or what.

Post back here after you give it a try. I'm curious to know.

Well, I gave it the food ol' college try... for about 30 mins on Saturday. The weather was miserable, and I haven't replaced my old worn out rain gear. So I only tried one set this last weekend.
I'll keep on 'em though. Killing these dogs will be my new year's resolution.

Congrats to thirstyswimmer on winning a 18" LaRue barrel. Maybe we'll see some kills from it next season.

You can build a clone of mine on the previous page. It's good to 800-900yds. Who needs to shoot farther than that?

If I had it all to do over again I would have used the 13.2" LaRue rail instead of the 12". You'll have the same barrel I do. Just get a good trigger, optic and mount; the rest is up to you.

Oh yeah, good heavy match ammo!

These are a few of my scouting pictures from this weekend.  First the porn.

Now for some of the bucks around the ranch.

And now for a strutting Tom Turkey in December getting chased by a Blackbuck doe.

Now for a Gemsbok.

that was just a one-time deal when Kyle Lamb came with us in the UH-1Huey and brought along his film crew

all the other times we just fly in the MD-500C Little Bird, so the Pig is not really practical for that... our next aerial hog hunt is this weekend, and we will just be using select-fire M16s and a 12 gauge shotgun

Now it's cooled off a little but the dang wind is blowing like crazy. I'm up at a different ranch this weekend and haven't seen much. Looking at the cameras here there is a ton of deer and then none. I'm guessing it's this warmer weather. Corn staying under the feeders. I'm really just wanting some hogs at this point. 4 of us here and one guy has shot a turkey but that's it.

The rut is in full swing in South Texas the bucks wont even slow down running across the senderos.  We have been using the best smelling apple corn I have smelled, it is from Ful-O-Pep in Cuero or San Antonio and it will not even slow the bucks down.  It is either the acorns that are on the ground or the hot does that has the bucks running with their tongues hanging and swimming in the tanks.

For what it's worth, my future FIL and I gathered several 5 gallon bckets of acons last year from under an oak that was in his front yard. He spread them out in front of his stand just like you would if you were hand corning. The deer were more interested in the acorns than the corn. You might try that if the only thing the horn dog bucks have on thier minds is hot does and acorns...

We spent a few hours on Wed evening and had to deal with tons of mosquitoes and a large wasp.  No deer or hogs came around.  But the family has shot 2 bucks at the spot already, so maybe that will slow us down.  I've never shot a deer or hog, so my buddy has taken me with him a few times to see if I can get lucky.  No dice yet.  He is really busy with work and his kids, so we don't get much time to run to the blind.  I've been told by multiple members of his family that live on the property to come out any time I want, but I wouldn't know the first thing to do after pulling the trigger so I just go when he can   ;)

Warm weather has had the snakes moving.  My parents had a big rattler  in their garage and our friend down the road a few miles killed an even bigger one (6+ ft) on his doorstep.

Be careful, kids

It sounds good in practice but will not work there is at least a 5 gallon bucket of acorns under each oak tree.  I live around Encino, TX across from the King Ranch so that should give you an idea of how out of the ordinary my country is for extreme South Texas almost in the RGV.

Very true. It won't bring them in any more than corn will, but it might just get them to stop for a few seconds while you get a shot set up where they would normally pass right by the corn.
I've also heard of spraying vanilla over your hand corn to add something "different". They are natually curious, so an odd sweet sent might hold them for a few minutes for a shot as well. I've never tried it myself, and probably won't since I'll be lucky to get one more weekend in the stand this year.

I got a couple of pigs this weekend. Had two groups come into a feeder 80 yards away - 5 pigs in each. My hunting partner got one shot off at the first group, I didn't fire. No hits. Second group came in an hour later, and we both got a shot off, him with a 30-30 lever, me with an 8.5" .300blackout. He hit the brown pig in the spine with a 150gr TSX, I put him down with a .45acp hydra-shok in the temple when we got up to him. Recovered the TSX bullet near the hind quarter, fully intact. I hit the black pig with a Remington 120gr OTFB behind the shoulder, DRT. Didn't find that round, but it may have been hung up in the chest cavity. Only quartered the pigs, didn't gut them.

Photobucket has been acting up so don't know if this will post correctly...

Got the two sows (with 1 round of 30-06) about 100lbs each, puts me up to 6 hogs on the year.  The boar was killed by another guy on our lease and was over 200lbs, we could barely get it in the truck between the two of us.  We drove a stake through the eyes of the boar to pin the skull down so it doesn't get carried off, now we wait for nature to help us make a euro mount.

Congrats to everyone's success so far. It's been a odd season to say the least with the warm temps and rain. TX Critter, that boar has some nice cutters on him!

I don't go back to my day job until the 4th so I guess I'll go do some more hunting. Now I have the difficult decision of what gun(s) to use.

The wind really had the animals in close to cover today. I still hunted and only seen a few young bucks. I did find a couple of caves though and a horn from a dead cow.
Conditions are looking much better for tomorrow. If I would have brought my shotgun I'd have a limit of dove right now; hundreds of them flying around the cabin.

The wind in sweetwater today was ridiculous even for Sweetwater standards. Not a lot was moving other than rats. I might have one more shot at deer before the season ends.

Some pics from the last few days. Had a lot of close encounters. It was hard to use my real camera because they got so close and I couldn't move too much so I used my phone, thus pic quality isn't all that great.
