Just my $0.02, but I doubt Whataburgers decision to continue to allow concealed carry, while banning open carry won't hurt them. |

True. But at the same time around here at lunchtime drive thru is stretching on to the shoulder of the highway and parking lot is full. Without something scientific such as sales records, I visually haven't seen any impact in terms of lack of customers.

If you don't live in a Tier One area with a staggering selection, Whataburger may be your best choice. That and I'm not spending eight bucks on some yuppie burger.
True open carry for me would be propping up a K98 in the booth while I enjoy my delicious beverage. |

Anywho back on track, already a thread here on their politics.
Around here folks are limited to fast food burgers like Whataburger, Burger King, Sonic, McDonald's, Jack in the Box and one fuddruckers(technically not fast food). For the price, Whataburger is #1, for best tasting burger for selection available here, Fuddruckers and they are proud of their food. |

most of the chains below are local to Austin/San Antonio. For the money, there's not a better burger than Might Fine.
For what it's worth, after my Dad moved to Alabama (30 years ago), he would regularly drive to Vidor (TX) to get a Whataburger... it was the closest Whataburger to him for a number of years. They eventually put one in Pensacola (FL), and now in Gulf Shores (AL). I know how he'd vote. Quoted:

And honestly with a dozen trips around Austin in last two years I don't remember seeing any of them. Hutt's... only one and it is on West 6th St., has been there since the 1950s at least. Their grass fed longhorn burger is to die for... Part of it is the ambiance... Hutt's is like a step back in time. No drive through, limited parking, but worth walking for. I used to walk from near I35 all the way over there for a burger on a nice day. Top Notch... again, only one... Longhorn Special burger and tater tots... classic Drive-In with parking lot service, inside seating & drive through... classic car shows in the evenings on weekends... very 1960s-1970s vibe. Dan's... 3 I know of... N. Lamar near 2222 is O.K., but the ones on Ben White (near Manchuca) and the one in Kyle/Buda (not that far from Cabella's) are better. Again, very retro place but with drive through. P. Terry's, several locations... Ben White, N. Mopac, S. Lamar, N. Lamar (not far from McBride's), A recent place with a 1950s feel but also drive-thru. Mighty Fine... Arbor Walk (near Mopac & N Loop 360) and Round Rock (University Ave exit) -- watch them grind and hand form your burger, its that fresh... Fries cut all day from whole potatoes too. No drive thru, but worth sitting down. Communal seating like Texas BBQ. There are a couple of bars on 6th St. that have a pretty good burger too... Casino El Camino and the Jackelope are both worth checking out if you are planning to have a beer or three with your burger. |

Terry's has great fries, but the burgers are not worth a second trip. Dans has been in Austin since 1973.. There was one on South Congress, now closed, and one at Ben White and Manchaca that completed an extensive remodel ( basically a rebuild) last year. In 1990, Dan and his wife Fran split and divided the burger joints, so for awhile we had Dan's and Fran's burger joints. As best I remember there are 4 Dan's remaining, including one in Buda, an one Fran's on Cameron Rd. |

The Fran's on South Congress just closed a year or two ago... the one on Cameron isn't bad, but you'll want to be packing if you visit it because its in da hood. There are a few really fancy burger places... Hoppdoddy is the most notable one... they make a great burger but the environment is very hipster and the prices are high... plus the line is usually horrible although it does move and you will eventually get served unlike, say Franklin's BBQ where you are SOL if you don't get there early. Mooney's Burgers is another... the one in PVille just closed but I think their other location(s) are still open. One place that USED to be good, but I don't think is as good as it used to be is Burger-Tex. They got bought out by Koreans and the menu changed up and the quality and service kinda took a hit... The one in PVille closed but there is still one on Airport I think. Another good local place (despite the name) is Dirty Martin's on Guadalupe... A little greasy... but a nice place to grab a burger and a beer if you are in the campus area... Kerby Lane Cafe (several locations) makes an O.K. burger, but it isn't really what they are known for, they are more of a Cafe/Diner kinda place. |

Don't they have any good local burger places in DFW or Houston? I get out plenty and love a good burger. For sure there are burger joints that taste better than Whataburger, but that comes at a price. And it's a bit disingenuous to compare a chain to a local mom and pop. There are dozens of great burger places in the DFW area that aren't chains but few have a drive thru, open 24 hours, open for breakfast, etc and offer the combination of quality and value that Whataburger does. See what $10 will get you at Smashburger vs Kenny's vs Whataburger (Whataburger will run 30-40% less) |

I don't plan on open carrying much if at all... but they're either for us or against us and it looks like they picked their side. They could have just done nothing and if nothing happened then... guess what, nothing happened, no big deal. Instead they did something that plays right into the agendas of extremist hate groups like MDA and the Brady bunch. I love Dans and Top Notch...... But you forgot about the Frisco Burger ..... Do they have then at their new location? I have not lived in Austin for a few years now.. |

A good burger for a chain, do not compare them to a gourmet burger though. I do not care for gourmet burgers at all.

Anyone can make a hamburger with a frying pan or backyard grill at home that tastes better than any restaurant listed. Many of the places listed are stupid douchebag places to eat.
Whataburger is in my wheel house of favorite places to eat. From the ketchup buckets to the free refills, I need that place. Most people order off the shelf Whataburgers, which is stupid. They will make you a Whataburger any way you want it. Next time, ask for a #1 on Texas Toast. There is no extra charge. Tell them to get the toast, toasty and buttery. Tell them to grill your onions in bacon grease. They will do this. |

Haven't been there in a while, but Shady Grove on Barton Springs Road used to make a mighty fine cheese burger.

Some places Whataburger is the only or best option. Mighty Fine is ok, but not as great as I was lead to believe by others. I know I needed a serious nap after eating there though. I've tried In and Out once, only because I didn't have any idea what to expect. Now that I know, I will never go back. Tiny over priced burgers with no options. Guess they are great if you like them covered in sauce so you can't taste anything else.

Last time I went the wait was forever and the fries were cold. Top Notch? Was my childhood favorite until Mighty Fine came along Hutt's? Good stuff but every time (lately) I go the burger is either dripping blood or burnt to a crisp Hell, for the money even In-N-Out, although I don't think they live up to all the hype from the Californicators. Not sure about the best burger (though I do like and eat them), but their bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit is pretty awesome.

Too bad all you guys that love Hut's in Austin so much,
don't know how to spell it. Hut's I've never hear of it, but it also does not appear to be a chain restaurant. |

Seriously, guys....I have heard the term 'gourmet' coined by these burger places and I don't see anything special about them. OK...so the bun and the patty are a little bigger; some ingredients are slightly different from the other places, freshness and made-to-order are considered 'gourmet' ??.. 'Gourmet' is labeled so they can justify to charge you more. If I want a fricking tasting burger, I cook myself....And it's not even hard to do. |

Deciding what burger is "best" is kind of like tastes in BBQ or Mexican food. Pointless.
Whataburger serves a traditional hamburger like many of us have enjoyed for decades. Comparing it to gourmet, hipster fernbar burgers is pointless. It's blue collar food as evidenced by all the linemen and construction workers you see in there. I eat there frequently. If I'm going to spend forty bucks to eat out, it won't be on a hamburger. |
