Been eyeing this one, but he didn't show up this weekend:

gear from inside the stand

Sig SSG3000 308, Vortex Viper PST 6-24, with TBAC 30P1
Noveske 8.2" 300, Vortex Razor 1-6 with SiCo Saker762
Vortex Viper 15x binos
Vortex Ranger

Went hog hunting in October at the lease, but was overrun with deer, and no hogs.
Fast forward to this weekend, and now the hogs decide to show up.

Nope- no points allotted because of boots. Bare toes or socks only- toe socks get bonus points.

Went to the publiclands doe cull and got really lucky Sunday. Saturday was swamped with hunters. All the grass is chest deep. Saw two doe running from me at 12:00' called it a day at three. Decided to hunt a more isolated area, it had a controlled burn last year.

Paid off ! on Sunday -I  took a nice doe at 7:30 then sat quiet for an hour, then when I figured it was time to gut and get gone- poof a conga line of doe come waltzing in.  Boom I drop my second doe- bag limit!  Woot.
Sorry - bout the crap pics- my screen is broken and that is how I take photos on that phone.

Ar is a 1/7 and I flattened the first doe with a mild 75 gr SMK.

Pistol is a G21 and 230 gr  rem hollow points.
And yes- .45acp kills deer dead bang. I was bloody handed in a gut sack and it was on my hip. 45 feet.
Just finished processing -freezer is full!

In Brady this weekend, we saw a lot of deer and and a couple dozen turkeys.  Took this dude Saturday afternoon.

Mostly a bird hunter growing up, so it took me a while, but I finally got my first deer! Dropped the caped head off with H&S Taxidermy in Buda on the way back to Houston.  I'm still grinning ear to ear!

Bah, 14 does under the feeder in the backyard this morning. One small buck, and gun shots all around. Probably won't have time to shoot one until this upcoming Saturday.

I shot a decent sized doe Sunday morning. The young bucks were starting to chase. This front may have kicked the rut into gear. I'm hoping it holds of to the week of Thanksgiving.

Oh and my truck is still being repaired.

I haven't hunted in 30 years but have always wanted to get back into it.

Having said that, a few weeks ago I bought a compound bow and now I'm looking for a place to go. How do you find a trustworthy landowner or some place to lease that isn't already packed?

I was hunting out of a 16 ft tripod on top of a hill along a fence line. I could see 600 yards west and a little over 200 east. He came in from the east and when he showed up, several other deer that were visible stepped away into the brush. I thought he'd step into the brush shortly and took an iffy shot. I could only see him face on and shot him in the neck just under his chin. Exit was low on the neck. An inch or 2 lower and the 208 AMAX would have ruined the deer.
Shot with a suppressed 700 5r milspec in 300 wm.

I seen your thread but decided not to comment at the time. To be perfectly honest the first thing you need to do is practice, practice and then practice some more with your bow. I didn't hunt for twelve years or so but got back into it using firearms first the took up a bow several years later. I shot three hogs with it and never found them. Ironically, after another auto accident, my arm was in no shape for a bow for a couple of years so I have it up. Your blood trailing, field craft and accuracy need to be excellent when bow hunting. I suggest starting with a rifle and working your way up to a bow.

As far as finding a trustworthy landowner I can't really help you. The owner of the place I hunt is a total dick.

I made chilli meat, hamburger mixed with bacon, roasts and steaks out of the doe. I brought the buck to the taxidermist/processor for sausage hamburger and steaks along with a euro mount.
I seen a few bucks last night that make my biggest buck look like a yearling. Hoping to get the biggest one tonight.

Had a nice mature doe in my crosshairs this morning, but she wouldn't stand still for me so I passed.  Hoped for another opportunity this evening, but it was piggy season again...

That's actually a pretty good sized hog.  All I could do to drag it out to a clearing.

11 degrees today. Should be in the 20s Monday ( opening day) will be scouting the next two days. Tjere is about 8 inches of snow on the ground. Makes seeing where they are traveling very easy.

Deer season continues at our lease near Castell. Was looking for pigs as I've already got my good buck and plan to get meat does later. Saturday morning I was hunting with my suppressed 308 AR build and had to get up and shoot quickly to get this one as it was just about to get in the brush. 150g Gold Dot through the shoulders.

This one is pretty big. My buddy saw another on Sunday that was smaller but didn't get a shot.

That's a nice cat! I've never shot one because I'd want to have it mounted but don't want to spend the money.

I'm going deer hunting for the first time in 15-ish years. I just got tired of it when it became work and then the money ran out anyway.
Truth is, I might just sit and watch and just enjoy being in the woods again.
I doubt I'll shoot at anything.
