If anyone wants to tag along since there has been interest in the past....

I'm going to meet and hike with the trail steward for Goat Island and a TPWD master naturalist tomorrow morning 7:15am for a hike on the new trails cut at Goat Island Preserve just north of Beltline Road Bridge on the west bank of the Trinity. That would be north of Mickey's gun range. Some trails, some heavy timbered bush travel too, probably some mud.

The trail steward has been busy working on trails out there for the county and wants to hike them. Parking will be on the old gravel shoulder bridge approach on county property on the immediate south side of the Beltline bridge, the old bridge approach. The location is where Beltline Road crosses the Trinity River. From Dallas, it would be south on I45 to Beltline Road. East on Beltline to the Trinity River. Park off to the right on the gravel area where we will meet and not parking near the entrance or gates or fences to Mickey's.

Map location is here:

Should be done by 11-11:30am.

How far are you planning on walking?

If I can find someone to watch my son, I might be able to do that.

Probably hiking up to the other end of the preserve. I want to get out on the islands which are further north on that property which is 400 acres. I need to be back in Dallas by noonish myself.

Crap, no sitter tomorrow.

My 5 year old is pretty active and ambitious, but he never stops talking. We'll have to sit this one out.

I know of a goat island over on/in lake Livingston, just off of FM 356, in Sebastapol. (In between Trinity and Onalaska) nice little island, full of goats...lol.

I know, I know. This just developed in the last 24 hours. Usually I try and plan these things out at least ten days for plans to gel.

I am doing a November 1st mountain bike ride inside the city limits, those details just went live tonight I think. 40-50 miles. White Rock Lake down to I-20 and back, weather permitting....

Lock and Dam #2 built in 1910

Trail builder/steward on left

On the lock

Massive Black Willow about where Parson's Slough cuts off from the Trinity, this will be the county champion Black Willow once it is verified with Texas A&M. Huge tree on an old oxbow

Haha.... This is the same goat island I was thinking of on lake Livingston - used to take girls over there to "tour" the island back in the day!

When we're in town for Tgiving or Xmas, I want to take the kids out there to see the lock and dam.  What a cool piece of history.  One has to wonder what a navigable Trinity would have done for Dallas...

Thanks for the cool pictures, refidnasb.

Black Willow? That's kind of uncommon.

They are the most common native willow. Salix nigra is the species name.

You and I, I'm sure we're speaking of the same Goat Island. The one they speak of is different.
