Greeting from Iowa,

I am looking at a job prospect in Riverton and thus possibly moving there. I would like to know about the area?

The interweb says that the crime rate is high there and that it is the worst place to live in WY?  I also understand that the town sits on a Reservation and that they took over? So if it sits on a Reservation is carrying guns there legal either open or concealed?

I like to hunt, fish and shoot things.

What else can you tell me about life, housing, or recreation there. Or should I run like hell and just forget about it.

THANKS

I've stayed in Riverton for a week at a time for work and it seemed pretty laid back to me.  My understanding is that Riverton has higher crime than usual.... for Wyoming.  The area is absolutely gorgeous.  I honestly don't know if Riverton is technically part of the Wind River Reservation or not.  Awful lot of pale faces live there if that's true.

As far as carrying, I've found the following information:

http://qcode.us/codes/riverton/
9.20.020 Weapons—Carrying.
No person shall carry, within the city, a deadly or dangerous weapon concealed on or about his or her person unless they are a peace officer, a person holding a valid concealed weapons permit, or persons in compliance with Wyoming State Statute 6-8-104. Any person who violates this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to seven hundred fifty dollars ($750.00), up to six months in jail or both. (Ord. 11-007 § 1, 2011; Ord. 02-006 § 8, 2002; Ord. 98-007 § 53, 1998; prior code § 16-108)

The Wyoming state statute that's referenced above sounds like the Constitutional carry provision to me.  Bear in mind, I don't live there, I've never spoken to a LEO there and I am not a lawyer.  Wyoming is a preemption state so local municipalities can't legally craft ordinances regarding possession, purchase or carrying of firearms.  Again, not a lawyer.

I'd run away.  I love Wyoming.  However, due to experiences I've had with the Tribe, as well as dozens of people who live on the Reservation; I would never live in, or within 100 miles of Riverton.

Maybe you'd have a different opinion.  Maybe it's worth visiting to make your own decision.

Look at Lander, it's not too far from Riverton, closer to the mountains, if you don't mind the granola people (land of fruits and nuts).  I've vacationed there several times and really like it.

The Wal-Mart in Riverton has one of the highest shoplifting incidents in the nation.  It has multiple casinos, the "big casino" being just outside town and that brings a whole sort of problems.  The town had a hate crime killing a year ago, white guy killed a tribe member in a rehab center.  The Rez also has killings regularly.  Last one was a guy who got stabbed many many times.

I'm sure it has a good side as well, but I'm not sure of those.

Consider living in Lander, and commuting to Riverton.

Lander is pretty fricken Granola these days...

I live a few miles to the west of Riverton if you have specific questions. It's pretty fucking cold right now.

Oh and if you are interested in Postal employment let me know.
