At the end of May I'm going to be visiting Montreal for the first time. It's my first time in eastern (and Francophone) Canada, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect. Any good suggestions of what to see/do?

Montreal is a mix of the new america and old europe. I would say it is a bit like Boston.
Most people will be bilingual over there but I am sure you will fall for the french girls

You need to see the downtown and his nightlife as you need to see the old part of it near the st-laurent with the old desing building.
if the Canadiens still in the run for the stanley cup (hope not, I'm a Sens fan ) you need to see a game and feel it!

Otherwise, old montreal, museum, biodome, many really good restaurants and much more depending of your interest. ( Forget shooting cub, there is only 2 major and nothing to write your mother about).

There is alot of people in Montreal that don't speak french at all. It's one of those weird cities. Best things I went to in Montreal were the Grand Pirx and the Just for Laughs festival. It's weeks of solid partying.

A lot to see depending what you're into:

Old Montreal section of the city is really chock full of stuff: http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/eng/accueila.htm

Notre-Dame Basilica: http://www.basiliquenotredame.ca/en/

Museum of Fine Arts: https://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/

Museum of Modern Art: http://www.macm.org/en/

Museum of History and archeology: http://www.pacmusee.qc.ca/en/home

Biodome (indoor zoo if it rains) http://espacepourlavie.ca/en/biodome

Botanical Garden: http://espacepourlavie.ca/en/botanical-garden

Restaurants:

You have to either go to http://www.lestersdeli.com/  http://reubensdeli.com/ http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/ and get a smoked meat sandwich

also:

http://www.joebeef.ca/

http://aupieddecochon.ca/ (you need reservations for this one)

BTW, the subway is safe here and much cheaper than parking in old montreal, it's also electric so you won't choke to death on fumes.

If you're driving: no turning right on a red in the city, the busses will blink to merge and they give 0 fucks so if you're not the 1st or 2nd car let them go

If you want to go to a titty bar you can touch (I heard this was not allowed in some states lol) but be warned that "Chez Mado" is a transvestite bar

Thanks! I'll be staying in Old Montreal and using the Metro to get around.

Btw the hockey playoffs might still be going on, if you see a riot that's what's happening

If you want to win massive points with service employees who greet you in french and people in general just practice your "bonjour" so you can say hi.

Also recommended, custom poutine:

Don't want to hijack, but I will also be going to Montreal in June and I figure why have another thread. What's the best way to get to the airport (YUL) from the Downtown (staying on Ave de President-Kennedy)? Also, I'm going for a work conference with a U.S. passport. Anything special needed for entry? I've heard Canada is picky about "working" in Canada, but the immigration web page says I don't need a visa. Going to be spending most of my time at McGill University. Any pro tips for navigating the city? Thanks

I would simply take a cab to your hotel.

Nothing special for entry beyond your US passport, but DO NOT say you will be working. Say you will be "attending a professional conference", "attending business meetings" or some such. In immigration-speak, you will be a "visitor for business purposes", which is distinct from being a "worker".
