THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I've searched high and low for an answer on line but can't seem to find a straight answer.

I know I can take 5000rd of ammo through Canada when I move south next month. Are there any restrictions on the type of ammo?

Specifically, I have about 1000rds of .40 JHP that I want to bring with me. Are they going to make a fuss about it at the border?

Not bringing any guns or parts with me. They are going FEDEX the day before I leave and I'll have shipping documents for everything to prove they're not with me.

thanks

AH

That shouldn't be any issue at all. Despite the popular rumor that HP ammo is illegal up here..it isn't.
I have some buddies in Border Services. I'll check with them for you.

Thanks. I went through 2 years ago with only a box worth but when I declare 5000 rounds this time they are probably going to want to look at it.

You may import up to 5,000rnds without an import permit.
No tracers or armour piercing rounds are permitted.

right from the CBSA!

no problem. Be sure you tell them you are moving back to the CONUS and not staying in Canada..apparently if you do you have to pay a 5% federal sales tax on the ammo...don't ask..I have no idea.
Apparently the Border folks just send you on your way when it comes to that.

I've paid a tax on shotgun shells we brought in to hunt with last fall.

I'll be sure to tell them that I'm moving and have it ready for inspection. I really hope they don't want to count it all...

Ya that's the kicker..if you are using them here..you have to pay tax on something you bought outside Canada.. just put em all in a plastic bag!

TaylorWSO hooked me up with the PDF at this link when I came up 4 years ago. Hope it's still current, or applicable, for when I move south in July.

I realized today when packing that I have a lot more than 5000 rds that I want to take.

Striker,

Can you ask your border friends if the 5000 rds is per person or per shipment/vehicle?

I'm traveling wit my wife so if we can bring 10k, it would be awesome. From the PDF posted earlier, I think it's 5k per shipment but it doesn't hurt to confirm.

for anything over 5000 rounds..or way over like you mentioned, you need an explosives import permit. http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/minerals-metals/explosives/3162
and be in compliance with the transportation of dangerous goods.

5k through Canada with no problem. They didn't even ask about it.

I had the gun paperwork filled out before I got there and they didn't even look at the guns.

piggybacking off your thread OP....

Just adding that I had the same experience with ammo today at the Beaver Creek crossing. Had it all counted at 4509 total rounds by type and wasn't asked. Better to be safe than sorry as 4 years ago I was asked for by round count coming north.

Went through on my passport, but told the Customs official, that I was military PCSing through. Likely due to that, he added on a question about weapons parts to include magazines...and also asked no M4 magazines. I'm sure he's had his fill of dumb ass joe trying to take his gear through Canada with all his military magazines. He was also well versed on military procedures, asking some basic questions related to my PCS. Smart dude

All in all, I made sure I was legal before going, and had a easy, professionally handled border crossing.

Now...if I could have stopped in Whitehorse, I would have been happier. There is a world championship women's fastpitch softball tournament going in town and they have the hotels booked up. Might have stayed a couple of days. Ended up stopping short at Haines Junction.
