if service sucked - nothing - IMNSHO
if service OK - 8-10% of bill - IMNSHO
If service was what was expected - 15% - accepted norm
if service was excellent - 20% - IMHO

Hope this helps

Then I fucked up because I forgot to leave a tip at breakfast this morning. I thought it was included and/or not done in Canada.

If we get the same guy in the morning I will make sure to leave a good tip.

You know the difference betweeen a Canadian and a Canoe? Canoes tip.

I told that to my wife from Kelowna, and she replied, "What do you mean? There is three dollars there!" (at a 50-60 dollar meal...)

God forbid a water pourer who does not smile, when my wife pays the bill. That is going to cost in the tip.

The tipping deal in Canada is exactly the same as it is here. If it wasn't for the different colored bank notes and the exceptionally friendly service you get in Canada you wouldn't be able to tell our two countries apart.

Just got back from visiting my parents in the US. My mom was making me tip more than what I do up here. So I don't know what to say.

I must admit I have never found that, I live in NY and I tip the same here as I do in Canada. I have heard Quebecers have a poor reputation for tipping though.

I usually tip well, and for odd reasons:

1. The restaurant industry is the only industry where the IRS presumes they make a certain amount in tips, and they are taxed accordingly. If that happened in all the places where tips are expected (hotels, bars, taxis, and so on) I might feel differently.
2. Restaurant work is tough, but honest work. I respect people for having tax paying jobs rather than slinging dope, or being an illegal hooker. Most of 'em don't get much in pay, and count on the tips.

So, I'm one of the odd ones that will almost always tip 15-20%. Less for crappy service or attitude, more for something out of the ordinary like free desert, free beer refills and so on. If the waiter/waitress gives me an unexpected yet appreciated freebie, I always add what the item would have cost me to the standard tip. Besides, helping others will come back around to me some day.
