We have a family thing coming up next month in Gardiner. The last couple years it hasn't been bad but this year looks gnarly. My current antifreeze is good to -35f but I noticed with the monster cold front tonight's low is -29f!

Should I have my antifreeze ready for -50 just to be safe?

We can cancel, but this might be Gramma's last suarez so we don't want to if it can be helped.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

You will be fine with -35

It's cheap insurance to do it.  We spent last New Years in West Yellowstone. Each morning was -20* air temp. The FJ did not appreciate that too much. On the drive home it took until Bozeman for the low tire pressure sensor to finally go away.

No reason to not go, man up and do your duty and pay the price after it is over.

Pretty much where I am on it, just wondered more as to where it would be better at. Fifty below? One hundred?

Stay home?

Next week it will be in the mid-30's here in the Bitterroot. Things can flip-flop back & forth.  And next month it could warm up in time for the Jan thaw before dipping down again. But the east-side is more prone to staying colder with stuff coming down from Canuck Land. As others have said -35 antifreeze will be fine.

I have always run mine at a 50/50 mix, and have had no issues down to -45.

Thanks for the replies,  I'm probably fine where it's at but I'm gonna be a pussy and increase it. That's just way outside of my comfort zone for things I'm used to

Make sure to maintain roughly 50/50 to 60/40 mix of antifreeze and water...too much of either isn't good.

I know people that have gone straight antifreeze assuming that was overall better...it's not!

You may already know that though...just a free PSA.

Also make sure your vehicle is in overall good condition. Good tires winter/all terrain tires, fresh oil and fluids. Pack a tow strap and a shovel. Jumper cables are also a good idea.

Hope your battery is OK. A bit more stress on it when things dip into the single digits and below.

BTW it's avalanche season so if you go snowmobiling don't go into risky areas. Folks have died already this winter.

Brand new battery, belt, plugs/wires, I have good chains and I will be hauling shovels and stuff. It's a road trip so we'll have food, water and blankets plis I usually haul stuff for one small fire in case of emergency.

I'm not used to -30f but I've been in the cold and snow and ice. It's a thing you take seriously or you risk it all.

Really not bad when you're prepared for it and get used to it. Still better weather than my time in northern MN.
