A New Jersey police officer shot and killed an attempted burglary suspect who allegedly hit him with a car during a getaway attempt Wednesday morning, prosecutors say.

The officer allegedly shot the driver after being hit by the suspect's car on New Jersey state Route 4 in Paramus near the River Edge border at about 5 a.m., according to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

Molinelli said the driver then crashed the car into the median and got out, but was captured a  short time later. The driver was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Three other suspects in the car were also taken into custody. It is not clear if they were injured.

The extent of the officer's injuries are unknown.

Police say the shooting happened after the four suspects were allegedly involved in a burglary attempt at a furniture store nearby.

Route 4's westbound lanes are expected to remain closed for several hours while authorities are at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

It’s not known when the road will reopen, but traffic is being diverted.
