THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
They are pre 1994 ban if that matters.

Also, I have a pre-ban Colt AR-15, can I drive through with that?

Not stopping in jersey, just driving through.

Thanks!

No!
It's illegal to possess the magazine even if you don't own a firearm that it fits.
‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure.

Unless it is a Match Target model, your Colt is probably a no-go as well.
NJ requires ARs' to be spayed and neutered.

Why not FedEx or UPS to your destination?
Better yet, just drive around NJ. Nothing to see here anyway.

So why can't Spaceman Spiff legally transport a CAR15 or 30 round mags through NJ if he follows the guidelines at the following link? Wouldn't he be protected by FOPA?

NJSP

NJSP

Also remember that FOPA is supposed to be a protection from prosecution, not from arrest. You can still be arrested, your belongings confiscated and held as evidence, charged and held for a crime and have to hire a lawyer before FOPA will do you any good. I don't have the time or money to deal with all of that so I wouldn't. To the OP, if it is a possibility I would highly recommend shipping the magazines instead of transporting them through NJ.

Well packed and stored in your trunk shouldnt be a problem...dont drive like an ass, which I know is hard to do in NJ, and you should be fine.....however....there are no guarantees.

Avoid N.J., regardless of the inconvenience.
My fault, your fault, nobody's fault- the copper is likely to lock your ass up and confiscate your goods.

Questions like this are always a source for disagreement. It boils down to "can you" versus "is it legal" versus "will I have a very very bad day."

When was the last time you were pulled over and had your car searched? As long as you drive like a sane human being, you are probably OK because 99% chance no one will ever know.

If you get into an accident and a LEO wants to inventory your possessions prior to having it towed, or something like that, you will be at risk. There is always the chance that you win the NJ FOPA Trifecta: Anti-gun NJSP Trooper + Anti-gun State Persecutor + Anti-gun Judge == a Very Very bad day. But that is unlikely.

Mostly, I would think your risks are:
1. Being taken into custody while they confirm that you are not a prohibited person.
2. An anti-gun persecutor looking to make a name for themself like what is going on in Philly with the poor schmuck who got arrested for having an AK on a SEPTA train.

I never advise someone to take a risk. I would feel horrible if I were to tell you that you are good to go, and then learn that you spent a weekend in jail or worse.
What I will say is that I often drive thru NY from NJ to VT with 12-round mags in my trunk. It is a risk that I choose to take based on my assessment of the odds. If anyone ever asked me if it was OK to do that, I would tell them no.

Make sense?

Dontalo, you make a good point. I sometimes I forget that how I interpret the law isn't the same way a police officer or judge could or would.
