What’s the best way to keep weeds out of the garden? I put a black tarp down, and then planted my vegetables, but no matter what I do my garden gets filled with crab grass and other weeds. I’m not too keen on spraying a bunch of chemicals into the garden since I’ll be afraid I’d kill the vegetables.

So what do you folks do to keep the weeds/crab grass out of your garden?

Thanks..

I already planted my veggies, so I just dump some on the weeds?

Also, does anyone have any experience in planting watermelon?

Crushed leaves and or mulch (natural color , not dyed) helps supress the weeds and keeps the plants moist.

I'm using the three sisters method where you plant corn, beans and squash in the same area.

I planted the corn seeds in early May and the pole beans and sugar pumpkins went in when the corn was 4 inches high.

Since this is my first attempt at growing corn, I don't know how it'll come out but as of today the corn is knee high.

This picture is from last week.

Maybe someone here can help me. I seem to be having some problems with some plants, and was wondering if anyone has had any similar experience.
Small ants, and what look like eggs on the underside of my okra leaves.

This is probably the worst off of the leaves.

Underside of the same leaf

Couple of other leaves. It looks like all of the plants have at least some of the egg looking things on them, but some have very few.

Different problem, but does anyone have any idea what could be eating my brussels sprouts, and what I could do to remedy the situation?
The worst of the damage

I sprayed a ton of Ant killer/spray around the garden, not on the plants though and so far that has helped.

Looks like aphids to me. The aphids suck up juices from the plants and the ants suck up the secretions of the aphids.

You may want to try an insecticidal soap to kill those bugs. Take a tablespoon of dish washing liquid and dilute it in a quart of water.
You'll have to directly spray the aphids and the liquid should do them in. Do this on a cloudy day or early morning so you don't burn your plants.

As for the holes in the Brussels sprouts, try looking under the leaves for tiny green cabbage worms or caterpillars. For a while there I had the same problem
on my cabbage leaves and I was hand picking the worms off the leaves several times a day.

Have you noticed any beetles on the leaves? They can also do similar damage.

Here's a picture of my mom holding the first cabbage we harvested today. Similar damaged leaves as on your sprouts.
