Wife and I are coming in May and we plan on taking the train. Seems to be the most effective in terms of cost and time.

just take the tube (Picadilly Line) straight into the city. It's the cheapest and easiest that's for sure.

Not sure how much luggage you have. If you are packing a ton, a cab might be the only option ($$$$$).

Heathrow Express takes you right into the heart of London.
Prebook tickets and you can get a price break for couples, kids etc. If you buy on the day it can cost you around £25-30 pounds IIRC, but prebook by a few months and it'll be less than £10.
