My 77 year old mother was admitted to hospital in January with difficulties breathing and abdominal pain, she hadn't slept well in over a month and had lost about 30lb. They ordered a bunch of standard test (x-rays, cat scan, etc etc), kept her hydrated for a couple of days until the pain was a little better, then discharged her as soon as there was a relative available to help her.
In the US those tests would typically be done while in hospital but in the UK she had to wait months for all the tests to be done.
Last week they told her she has a bad heart murmor skipping multiple beats at a time but had no plan to do anything about it, and that they didn't know what was causing her abdominal pain so she should just call her doctor if it gets really bad again.
My sister-in-law has had surgery to try to fix her crumbling knee, it didn't work, they told her she needs a knee replacement but they won't do that yet as she is too young and it would wear out quickly (she is in her 40's).
