THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I am needing some help. My father is turning 80 years old this week. 64 years ago he was working at one of your bases, Fairford. He was 16 when he joined the armed forces and headed to England to help out. He spent several years in Fairford, building it up to launch bombers from it. I am trying (and failing miserably) to find some old pictures of the base back then. Something of an aerial view is what I am looking for, high enough definition so I can blow it up for a large picture. I started a thread in GD asking for help, and I was pointed here.

Not sure anyone has anything, or knows of someone. Dads health hasn't been the greatest lately, and there are a lot of doubts he's see 81. So I need to do something different. He's not computer literate, heck, he got his GED through the Army (and went on to do very well in life). But every time he stops at my house, all he wants to do is talk about the War and see pics of England. I'm always happy to do that with him. I relish his stories. But, I don't know what else to do.

If you can help an old Yank out, he'd be forever in your debt. Me too.

Thanks in advance. I'll check this in the morning.

For starters:

RAF Fairford is the home of one of Europe's biggest airshows, the Royal International Air Tattoo:

By the lucky chance of the Internet - I live in Fairford

If your Dad would like some modern day photos of Fairford, so he can see how it has or hasn't changed since he was here, then tell me what he remembers and I'll try and take some pictures of it and send them to you (unless it's a barmaid from one of the pubs )

I'm also planning on going to the Air Tattoo in July, so if he would like some pictires of the base (that won't result in me being arrested for spying) then I'll see what I can do.

Having looked at the sites Icarus suggested, there is a book available from there that he might enjoy:

RAF FAIRFORD, 1944 - A MOST MEMENTOUS YEAR

http://www.fairfordhistory.org.uk/fairfordhistorypublications.html

There is a contact mail address; however as I am a "local" and probably know the people involved I can contact them and see if I can get you a copy if you want?

Comment from another site:

'I think all the JARIC stock went to English Heritage (National Monuments Record). They have excellent coverage of a lot of places. Gaydon and Wittering were certainly well catered for. I suspect Fairford is very well covered during and post rebuild too. The problem would be the fees for publication and possibly security until more recent times.'

Might be worth following up with English Heritage..

I really appreciate all of the information. You've been very helpful in getting some very good information to me. I'm constantly amazed of the willingness of my fellow arfcom friends/strangers. Thank you very much.
