THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Apparently the Air Mobile Brigade here held some sort of exercise and afterwards some playing kids discovered they forgot one of their guns.

They ran home to tell their father who promptly picks up the gun takes it home to take pics to show his wife and then proceeds to take it to the police station who at first don't believe he has a machine gun in the trunk. The defence ministry blame the incident on miscommunication (a guy was supposed to play wounded and somebody else was supposed to take care of his weapon).

The kids who found the gun have been invited by the defence department to come and watch a exercise

Good thing the exercise was with blanks though cause I could not imagine the shit storm if an accident would have happened. I still expect there will be a lot of shouting at the base though.

I invite the air mobile brigate to use my garden anytime

Should be a Diemaco AR variant with a front forward grip + bipod . The junk on the front are a blank adapter and a device for the .mil version of lasertag.

Interesting point there as what the guy did was illegal (he took possession) an a judge would have no choice but to convict.

He was lucky that the Military/police didn't need any bad press and that he was in the Dutch version of redneck country. A big city department would probably 'made an example' because the blanks might have hit a schoolbus

Really here 99% of the general population and 80+% of the police would not be able to tell the difference.

Really. We have similar laws here in that it's illegal to possess, as would be say a bag of cocaine. However if someone finds such an article and takes possession of it solely for the purpose of reducing it to lawful authority, ie taking it to the Police, or even the military in the case of one of their own weapons, there is no offence committed. The rationale being it may not be practical to stay with the found item, and if you simply reported it and left, by the time the authorities got there it may be gone, or worse caused harm to someone messing with it.

Arguably, this guy who took it home to take pics first went outside of that, but it's unlikely he would be prosecuted, having done them a huge favour..

Seattle PD leaves AR15 on car

Everybody's done it.

You place an item on top of a car only to remember later — after you or someone else has driven off.

But when the forgetful individual is a Seattle police officer and the item is a semi-automatic rifle, it's more than a little embarrassing. It's also the focus of an internal investigation.

Seattle police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb conceded Tuesday it was "very embarrassing" that a semi-automatic rifle was left on the trunk lid of a police cruiser in downtown Seattle on Monday.

"The fact of the matter is that a police rifle was left on a car in public, and that is unacceptable," Whitcomb said. "It's very embarrassing, and it shouldn't have happened."

According to two sources with knowledge of the incident, it began when one officer was inside the secure parking garage at the West Precinct and unloaded his equipment from a police cruiser. The officer placed the rifle on the trunk of a nearby patrol car.

That officer, identified by sources as acting Sgt. Bill Collins, forgot about the rifle and walked off.

Another officer, identified as Lt. Deanna Nollette, then went into the garage and drove away in the patrol vehicle without realizing the rifle was on the trunk lid, the sources said.

The patrol car was parked a few blocks away from the West Precinct in front of the Roosevelt Hotel on Seventh Avenue around 9 p.m. Monday when at least two people spotted the rifle on the unattended vehicle.

A man who identified himself as Nick Gonzales confirmed he snapped a photo of the unsecured weapon.

Police said he then flagged down a couple of nearby bicycle officers.

A second witness noticed the rifle around the same time, and tracked down and alerted the officer, Whitcomb said.

He would "not confirm or deny" the sources' account, but said an investigation has been launched into the "circumstances that would allow for this patrol rifle to be left on this car."

He also couldn't say whether the rifle, reportedly an AR-15, was loaded.

Whitcomb would not speculate as to whether either officer would face discipline, but the Police Department's policy manual requires officers to inspect patrol vehicles before use.

He said it is a violation of the department policies to leave a weapon unattended, but not a criminal violation.

Whitcomb said such rifles are assigned only to officers who have additional training.

The high-powered weapons usually are kept in the trunk or between the driver and passenger seats.

One of my best friends lives in a small northern German town.
And he has told us of when he was a kid back in the early '70s , he and some friends found a "machine gun" in the forest around their town. Based on his description, I'm guessing a STG-44.
They then proceeded to take turns shooting it, which was heard by someone in town, who alerted the Polizei, who showed up and confiscated the gun and took all the kids home to their parents.

He's also told stories of them finding a couple of finding a couple of swords during that time that were older than the wars. And they would take them to the 'castle' on the hill above the town that had a small museum that would pay the kids for the swords.
I knew daredevils and I ain't got nothin' against them, ........it's just they're all dead.
