What kind of bug is this?

It's body is an iridescent blue/green, and a little smaller than a thumb nail.

I think this just became one.

Spotted this guy last year.  Mid September at about 8500 feet in elevation north of the Jemez.  Dragging the piece of crap looking larvae.  I believe it is an ant of some sort.  Don't really know.  About 2 inches long.

Yep.  Did a bit of digging and you nailed it.  Ammophila (wasp)  Commonly called Thread Waisted Wasp or Sand Wasp.  Closely related to Mud Dauber.

Have seen those but didn't know what they were.  Headed to the mountains for some elk scouting.  Thanks to this thread, I will be looking for some bugs as well.

I don't know that this qualifies as a bug, but here it is anyways.
I was trimming some branches in the back yard and this guy showed up.

Katydid got lucky and only lost a leg to something.

Saw some great new elk areas, but no weird bugs.  Did see another Thread Waisted Wasp, but took off too fast for pics.

Pretty sure those are not to be messed with. Supposedly one of the more painful stings. Velvet Ants, AKA Cow Killers.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutillidae

Yup.
Females don't have wings. They are wasps of a sort.

Just lie down and start screaming.

My brother got stung on the back of his hand by one of those.  By the time we got home, his hand was the size of a grape fruit.
The pain wasn't short lived like the article states.  He was in agony way past a few minutes.

Ah, the northern new Mexico drink and stink beetle, know mostly for its consumption of whores and alcohol.

They're pretty rare and can usually be sighted getting checks from train construction contractors, or in the back of a BMW leaving the scene of a hit and run.

It's easy to notice them because of the excess cigar smoke.
