There's quite a bit of walk in hunting available in that part of the state, but I don't know how good of deer hunting it is. Most of it would be in pretty wide open spaces. There's not many trees to put a stand up in, but I'm sure you could find a few spots. The best way to hunt deer out there is to get permission from some farmers and drive around their land at dusk or dawn until you see one. If you wanted to shoot an antelope instead of or in addition to a deer, there are quite a few farmers around who would pay you to shoot one. They are quite a pest in that area.

I hunt southeast KS and have alway had 100% success on getting a buck. Not always wallhangers but I have no doubt I could get some better ones if I had the time.
Here are a couple

Last years 8pt. Not really a monster but shot him on the run at 200 yards while he was chasing a doe through the trees. More impressed with the memory of the shot than the buck.

An old one from when I was a teenager. Should have at least european mounted it. It is wider than it looks. 13pt

This is the one I have been hoping to see the last couple years. I call him "Dozer"

Most public land from central KS on east is already overhunted, mostly by nonresidents such as yourself. I have to drive 90 minutes to get somewhere that I don't encounter an out-of-state tag. Out west the public land is more for birds as there are so few trees out there. Your best bet would be NW Kansas and asking farmers if you can hunt. Get an either-species tag if you hunt that area, as you will be just as likely to encounter mulies as whitetails.

I sense a bit of bitterness here. But i know how u feel brother cause we r being pushed out of our hunting lands. Cause people from Fla come and willing to pay two to three times the money asked for leases and timber companies land. So if i got to pay that much ill go out state and during the time and a take a chance on eating a tag sandwiches. I use to hunt to spend time with family and I still do but i a serious bug bite last yr in Kentucky when I shot my 140 class 9 pointer. Im looking for a booner for the wall. But if u recommend West and northwest ill look into that also. Thanks for Ur time.

I grew up in SW KS and I will see if I can help you out. Out of staters are welcomed by some, hated by others. A lot of ground that locals grew up hunting on has been bought up by outfitters who are charging beaucoup money to out of staters and locals are running out of places to hunt so there is some bitterness, but that is happening everywhere, not just here. There is lots of public ground, but it is seeing more use due to lack of places for the locals.

And trespassers/poachers are ruining it for everyone. Nothing like watching a nice buck on YOUR OWN ground for several months waiting for season to open, just to have some jackass trespass and poach him out from under you.

But, if you are a good dude and you make sure you know where property lines are and stay where you are supposed to, come on out. Everything west of Wichita is gonna be a different world that what you are used to in Georgia. Very little timber and it is mostly along the creeks and river bottoms. Most of that is private or already staked out by locals. What you have in the western half of the state is flat open crop fields, CRP, and sage and yucca pastures. Did I mention flat? Cause its flat. My experience is mostly west of Liberal in the very SW corner. You also have the Cimmaron National Grasslands there. Thousands of acres of public ground.

You won't see whitetails until the corn is cut. They have everything they need in the corn fields and they won't come out. Once the corn is cut, they will mostly bed in the CRP and sage pastures. You will need to find a high spot(few and far between) and watch them go in and bed in the morning. You will need GOOD optics. You will see deer moving literally two miles away if you have good optics(cause its flat).

Then it becomes a spot and stalk game. Play the wind, take your time, and go get them. If you see them before they see you, you have a good chance of filling your tag with firearms, lesser chance with archery but still a fair chance. There are some real monster whitetails out there in the sage brush. Booners are rare, but they are out there. 140 to 160 inch deer are a real possibility and my family takes bucks of that size nearly every year.

The eastern half of the state is more like you would be used to. Lots of timber, broken woodlots etc. That's were I live now and there are plenty of trees to hang a stand in. Again there is public ground available but its pretty crowded.

Another poster mentioned antelope. Non-residents cannot get a firearms tag so if you want to hunt goats in KS, its gonna be an archery only game.

Good luck, but respect the locals.

Thanks bud. I understand the bitterness. But I will assure u that i am not going to come out their offer tons of money to become a outfitter or to take over a lease for a season just to hunt a week or so. And if do cross over property line it b to recover a deer or by accidental I assure u.. I plan on coming out their early spring before the leaves start growing or fields start to grow. And maybe I can find a farmer who will let hunt for a week and take couple of deer. And im looking for a booner. So im going to trigger happy I might eat a tag sandwich just to b able wait for that booner. Thanks again for info. And if any of got any leads to a farmer who might let hunt week in Nov pm info and ill be happy and appreciate it.
