On May 29, 2017, the Alaska Wildlife Troopers received a report of a grizzly bear that had just killed a newborn moose calf near the intersection of Plack Road and Gordon Road in North Pole, which backs up to the Chena Lakes Recreation Area. Witnesses stated that the bear only ran into the woods after one of them turned on a lawn mower to scare it away. The deceased calf was taken to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for a necropsy. The public is asked to exercise extreme caution around this area.
