Which one?

If not then which revolver?  Would you consider a Smith 640 enough?

I've used my G20 for about 6 years as my hiking gun, never had to use it, but there was a close call once.  Pretty confident in hardcast 10mm to get the job done.

Just got it a big brother to replace it, the compact is for city carry.

I like the GLock 20 as a train gun. I reload a 200 grain bullet at 1175 fps. Its a balance of power and controllability. It will penetrate a bears skull. I would not take a J frame its difficult to shoot fast and accurately with and it runs out of ammo fast. Also a .357 out of a 2 inch snub is about he same as a 9mm out of a 4 inch auto barrel. I like the 9mm for personal protection against people but not bear.
I recently got the long slide 10mm Glock (model 40 weird) and I like it a lot as well. For revolvers I recommend the Smith and Wesson mountain gun in 44 mag. But there are lots of good choices. No matter what you get practice with it and get good.

I used to use a wheel gun (44 mag) a long time ago, then I switched to my Glocks. My carry gun is a G20sf loaded with BB 220 hard cast.  It has served me well and no reason to go back to a wheel gun.

G20 FTW.

15 rounds of 10mm in a platform that can rapidly put rounds on target is better than a hand cannon that most people don't shoot well on the range, let alone under stress, and does not lend itself to rapid rounds on target.

How about a Glock 29SF?

I'd take it over a wheel gun, but I prefer the full size for in the woods.

Too much recoil with the full power loads and with lighter loads you might as well carry a Glock 23. Personally not a fan of the 29.

Glock 20, loaded with 200gr hardcast at 1300fps. Tested with PACT timer 3 hits to one over a 4" 44 mag with 240gr bear loads.

The real question is, can you get hits on a 8" moving target?

Until that day,

I carried my EAA Witness 10mm on several occasions when I lived in AK- never felt under-gunned at all, especially with Alaska Backpacker hard cast lead loads.

My Glock 21 has been my go to hiking gun.
