12:00 p.m. update: FAIRBANKS - A man charged with kidnapping two sisters last week in North Pole reportedly told police he did it because he wanted to give the girls' parents a lesson about the dangers of letting kids ride bikes alone, according to the case against him.
Michael D. Bowen Jr., 40, was arrested Friday on a federal kidnapping charge related to the brief Aug. 1 abduction of two girls, both younger than 10 years old. Both girls were returned unharmed to North Pole not long after they were reported missing.
The FBI arrested and questioned Bowen about the alleged abduction on Friday after an FBI agent spotted a Dodge Ram truck on Van Horn Road that matched a detailed description given by the two girls.
Bowen initially denied he was involved, but later said he took the girls because he was concerned for their safety, FBI Special Agent Derik Stone wrote in the criminal complaint filed against Bowen.
"When asked why he took the girls, Bowen said he wanted to scare the parents. Bowen believed the girls were too young to be out there on their own," Stone said. "Bowen admitted he knew what he did was wrong and further stated that he did it once and he would likely do it again."
Bowen allegedly forced the girls from their bicycles and forced them into his truck at about 4 p.m. Aug. 1 as the girls rode by North Pole Middle School. Bowen drove away on the Richardson Highway and security footage from a business along the way showed he had a bike in the bed of his truck and a "small in stature" passenger in his passenger seat, Stone said in the complaint.
The girls told police Bowen drove south more than 15 miles, passing the Knotty Shop in Salcha, before reversing course. Along the way, one of the girls said she told Bowen that her father worked for the police. This girl also told police that Bowen took her cell phone from her when it rang. The girls said Bowen dropped them off with their bikes in the parking lot of a North Pole dental office about a mile from where he took them.
