What is it really like? How is the job market? Got a CDL and used to be in law enforcement(no desire to go back into that). Got 2+ years chemical plant experience in Logistics. Any decent paying work up there for someone like me? I've heard about the dicey job market up there. Currently wanting to relocate by the end of the year to some place new. Got some options on the table but Alaska I've heard is #1 when it comes to taxation. Making $20 an hour at the moment.

Poop!!! All poop!!!!

If you have a CDL with Hazmat enforcements, you will have a job in a heartbeat.

A CDL will get you work in a day, It won't pay enough to live here though.

It depends where in state and how you want to live.  In the Fairbanks area, $1k a month is pretty much the cheapest rent you'll find short of a dry cabin.  Renting houses runs around $1500+utilities.

That said, a CDL with hazmat and a dual tank cert (don't know the proper name for it) will land you a job with pretty much all the overtime you can handle right now.  Most places will start $15-20 depending on experience.  IF you decide to come up, let me know and I can get you in touch with some folks.  They are looking for a hazmat driver with double tank experience, and would probably pay a touch better and has crazy benefits.

On the other hand, with oil prices being so low the state is getting ready to take a huge hit and nobody knows what the effects will be.  There are a lot, and I mean a lot of folks leaving AK right now.

Have a job lined up before coming.

Low taxes are nice.  Cost of living is not.  Rent doesn't include heat, which around Fairbanks is probably going to be what your taxes would be.
