I've read some of the threads in the archives regarding living in Juneau.  I've got a phone interview on Monday for a prospective job up there, and I just wanted to know if anything has changed since those previous posts.

Also, I wanted to clear up some tax information:
No State income tax.
No State sales tax, but local cities have tax rates, Juneau is 5%
Property tax on real property inside the incorporated areas
Flat tax rate on vehicles based on age and city of residence

Is that about right?

Thanks for your help.

I would be looking at a promotion, so I think the COL difference could be ok. Is decent employment for my wife available?  She currently does customer service, but was hoping to get into personal training. I think at least to begin with she would take anything she could get. She has a b.s. in business,  and experience in human resources too.

I'm really not sure if you are being sarcastic or not.    Unless something magically changed, as far as I know it is just barge or airline in or out, and that makes things a bit more expensive.  Feel free to say otherwise though.

When is the legislature in session? Maybe I can adjust when I move up to avoid it, or maybe come in just after.

Holy crap, the public school system failed me.  I would have sworn it was.

I'll be in the corner feeling retarded if anyone needs me.

How long ago?  I ran a coffee shop in the market for a while. 11/10 to 06/11 before we shuttered it when the MIL passed.

June 05 to July 06. Got my PADI cert at Nautilus dive shop there. Worked on saddle road realignment among other things while I was out there. Loved it.

Nautilus is a neat shop, although the owner was a character lol.  We were set up kind of cornered away from them in the lot behind the shell station.  I'd love to go back and visit sometime.  Miss the weather

ETA:  Sorry about the island bits.  I would have sworn Juneau was on an island.  *facepalm*

Yeah, Bill was interesting. I got along with him really well, and he was a great instructor.  I know where you're talking about. We used to hang out down there, go to $.50 movies at the budget theater and  get shave ice.  I really enjoyed the big island.

Don't sweat the island comment. I know that Juneau is effectively an island, if not geographically one.  I'm going into it with eyes open. One of the perks with the job is a paid trip back "home" for the family after 2 years. They don't do that kind of thing unless you are REALLY isolated.  I've got a lot of questions to ask when I interview, and may just hold out and wait for a job opening in Anchorage (my wife actually won a trip while we lived in Hilo, and we loved it up there).

Anchorage has good and bad.  There is a decent amount of bad as it is about as far north as a lot of the trash is willing to go.  I do miss having a lot of the stores at hand.  The museum store was kickass

I got news for you, Fairbanks has good and bad, too

Juneau is cool, but you will get island fever (see what I did there?)

Surprising how many actually think it is.  I went to a meeting in Chicago about 10 years ago (well before cable TV reality fuck ups) and more than one thought I lived on an island, and thought we had no pavement.

Juneau doesn't have Mountain View, so there is that going for it... Its fitting that we have so many Islanders on our... island.

But yes, Northern Seattle will be a nice place to live.

Mountain View?

He refers to the mixed ethnic neighborhood ( hood), 'Mountainview' is known for it's  section 8 workethic, and disproportionate  share of criminal enterprise.

You really need to believe about the limited housing market. Maybe it's just the couple people I knew were legislative staffers, but they rented couch space to sleep. They were willing to rent apartments; couldn't find any.

A lot of City-Data and Alaska Outdoors posts say to just avoid anything ending in "View".

Well, I was offered the position, and accepted.  I will probably be moving to Juneau the week of May 18th, but the exact date is still up in the air.  I will get a chance to do a house hunting visit with the wife prior to that, so I'm looking forward to it.  Thanks for the input everyone.  It was appreciated.  Now to get my year in so I can get in-state hunting licenses...

I'll see what I can do. If you're serious, I'll bring some up on my house hunting trip. Brand preference, or just as long as it goes bang?

I've always wanted to move to Juneau.  Love the rain, but finding work/place to live sounds like a colossal pain in the ass.  Quiet and rainy is pretty much my dream place

I scored at Walmart! I got THREE 50rnd boxes of .22. I am awesome!

I met Mr. Armstrong when he came for a visit. I'm not sure he will be a good fit. His family and himself are very nice people, way different than what is on ARFCOM.

Great addition to Juneau and Alaska. Welcome home.

I wish I had enough to test that policy!  Alas, I will be taking the ferry up anyway. And the pickings aren't much better down here, so I probably won't be bringing much beyond what I've got on hand now.

Thanks to lespaul1 for his hospitality. He's a class guy. I'm looking forward to making the move next month!
