We're in MO, wifey has to attend a class this week in Des Moines. In reviewing the IA gun laws PDF from 2016 it seems as though out of state permit holders are exempt from the crappy transportation laws (pistol), but the SmartGunLaws site (10/17/16) confuses me with the part about generally prohibiting transportation of loaded pistols on their highways.

Can someone clear this up for us? Thanks!

Iowa recognized all other states carry permits.

No carry permit no legal loaded gun in the passenger compartment of a vehicle.  Some states allow this Iowa is not one of them.

I wonder how things will change in Jan. when MO no longer requires a CCW, then again this is the fisrt time weve strayed up north, so we prob. wont have to worry about it again for some time.

Yep with her MO permit she is fine to carry in IA.

Until Iowa goes Constitutional Carry a permit will be needed.
