I'll be staying at the Isle casino hotel in Waterloo this weekend and had a question regarding carry:

Does anyone know if the restriction on carrying in casinos applies to the entire property or just the actual casino inside the hotel? Or is this one of those legal gray areas where nobody has been the test case yet? I'd like to be able to keep mine with me in my room rather than leaving it in my vehicle but won't do it if there's potential for a crapload of legal trouble should housekeeping or somebody find it and freak out.

Thanks in advance.

Had no idea. I've had mine on me every time I've been to an Iowa casino.

The hotel should be fine, from how I read the law the gaming floor area is the only prohibited place.  At Diamond Joe's in Northwood they signs have saying firearms are prohibited in the casino but if you can to the restaurant area with your firearm.

At my CCW class, we were told if a hotel is connected to a casino it is off limits.

Can some lawyer-type person explain to me how administrative code violations (such as the casino "law") are enforced.  Let's say I'm a law enforcement type person and caught someone carrying in a casino.  How would I fill out the criminal complaint for the violation and what section would I charge under?

Just curious

You can carry anywhere within the hotel EXCEPT the gaming floor. Once you're passed the entry point where they check your id it's a no go.

Correct it is the gaming floor that is off limits. That should be a clearly marked and defined area. There are casinos withs spas, hotels and golf complexes as part of the overall property.

Take a better class next time, they are wrong.  The A code specifically mentions only the gaming floor inside casino property.  If the property owner bars weapons in other areas, it'll be posted with the usual no berettas signs.

A-code would be enforced with "remove your firearm from the premises" request followed with a criminal trespass charge.  You can't charge an A-code on a criminal complaint.  Same thing for state fairgrounds, state capital complex buildings, etc.

You made my point.  That law carries no more weight than a store posting it on the door.  If they don't know you are carrying, they can't request you leave.

I was there a couple years ago, signs posted said no weapons on licensed gaming floor or something like that. I took it to mean keep guns out of casino room and no worries.

A reasonable extension of the obvious.

Yet everyone still freaks out about a toothless law.

Only those who don't know better because their instructor or someone else told them signs carry force of law when they don't. I don't much care whether I print or not or if it even sticks out from under my shirt unless there is a kid nearby. Kids see too many things and don't know when to be quiet about such things unless mommy and/or daddy carry.
