Got me a vortex viper LR 4-16x50, did a rough zero today, going back out with a cold barrel to confirm zero or tweak a bit more before the weekend. Hopefully I can get the .308 out to 800 yards +.  If anyone has a extra 20 moa rail for a savage 10 let me know as I'm looking to pick one up.

change of plans...

we'll be shooting north away from the road all day most likely...  the corn is coming out today, so that may give us some opportunities at various ranges we hadn't explored in the past.  so.....  this little twist of fate may make for a much nicer shooting array.

Looks like me and 1 or 2 guys from work are interested in coming by.  None of us have long range rifles, but we can bring what we have a poke at the closer targets.

Would love to try that demo rifle.

I give 90% odds that we will not make it.  Most likely will need to work that day.

I was gonna bring a little shooting table.  It's a pos.  I found a couple small tumbling mats that will probably only fit 4 people, but I'll share the padded comfort.  Is there a need for an extra 6' folding colapsible table?  People could shoot from sitting behind it, and maybe even from the ends of it as well.

This look about right on where to drive to? http://goo.gl/maps/YD74i

The lat/long you posted earlier in the thread looks like last year's shooting position when I plug it into Google.

Are there going to be any bigger steel targets at 100 yard like last time so we can play around with long range handgun?

maybe.  depends on how we lay them out.

Hey Septic,
Thanks for putting this on.  I had to bug out early when my wife called.  Sister in law lost her battle with cancer today. That Grendel can sure shoot.  I hit that 600 at will.  I couldn't out guess the wind farther out.  And I need better glass to shoot much farther.  Anyway, give me a call when you get started on the rifle.

Had a great time!  Not disappointed in the 6.5 CM at all, even shooting past where my 120's were still (probably?) supersonic.  Thanks to everybody that contributed.  I didn't get to shoot it but that LMT looked pretty sweet and the mouse farts coming from the suppressor were a lot nicer than the blast wave from my and everyone else's brakes.

Had a great time shooting with everyone, here is my drops/ballistics for my two rifles I was shooting at 1000 and 1200:

Weather Conditions I used:
44 degrees F
56% humidity
29.05 absolute pressure

.300 WIN MAG (In Accuracy International AX Chassis) with Schmidt & Bender 5-25 scope, shooting Black Hills 190gr SMK at 3013 FPS

1000 - 8.1 mils elevation (282.0 inches of drop) L3.5 for wind (19MPH WIND HOLD) (127.0 inches lateral travel) velocity at 1000 was ~ 1487.6 FPS

1200 - 11.0 mils elevation (473.4 inches of drop) L 5.0 for wind (21MPH WIND HOLD)  (215.0 inches lateral travel) velocity at 1200 was ~ 1244.3 FPS

Sako TRG-22 .308 WIN with Vortex Razor II 4.5-27 EBR-2C Scope, shooting handload Hornady 178gr HPBT at 2800 FPS

1000 - 9.6 mils elevation (346.2 inches of drop) L 4.0 for wind (18MPH WIND HOLD) (148.0 inches of lateral travel) velocity at 1000 was ~1279.4 FPS

1200 - 13.7 mils elevation (592.1 inches of drop) L 5.0-5.2 (wind was gusting from 16-18 MPH ( ~225 inches of lateral travel) velocity at 1200 was ~1062.5 FPS (TRANSONIC at ~1050 yards)

Yeah, I tried to call Mike when he was putting those targets up but the operator kept telling me I had to dial a 1 then the number.  Hence different area code.

About 10 years ago I was doing some Cowboy Action stuff.  Had an Browning BPRC 45-07 shooting a steel buff cutout at 600,  Shooting 405 grain bullets.  Once a guy got the hold over right you could ring steel all day.  That too was fun, different but fun. Kind of like lobbing mortar shells.

I ended up using 14.6 mils of elevation and a 6.75-7.25 mil wind hold on the 1200yd target with the Hornady 120gr 6.5CM rounds.  The windage was really just a guess after watching splash, my ballistic calc told me to start at 5.something and it clearly wasn't enough.

Would have liked to have been running the 140's which perform better at that distance but the factory match load strung vertically for no reason.  Oh well.  I have more than enough brass now to start reloading, might do 133's.

Couldn't hear the hits at 1200 what with double ear pro and everyone shooting, but at 1000 it was pretty funny waiting for the quiet ring of the steel to make it's way back.

I was shooting the 140s and the wind didn't seem to be all that much better.  I ran out of turret on that vortex as its on a 0moa base.  I will be swapping my bushnell over to the gas gun and put the vortex on the gap today I believe to see how they sit.

alright...

first, thanks to LMT for the goods to build up a demo weapon, thanks to ryan from nightlong industries for the optics atop the demo rig, and to dave, nick, brian, craig, and all the guys who pitched in to make this shoot possible.  james, russ, tom, dustin, and many others helped with set up and tear down.  thank you guys!  it makes all the difference!

this is a view of our shooting lane:

here is the layout and some of the data.  while the initial wind reading said 14mph, my windage calcs showed an aggregate 20mph wind average most of the day.

we had a wide range of rifles present.  gas guns, bolt guns, etc.  we saw everything from customs, to stock guns, to TRGs, and even garands...

some folks running the 6.5CM LMT demo gun:

the shooting line:

i was running a 6.5CM bolt gun most of the day.  i had 43MOA elevation @ 1200 yards and 19MOA windage at the same distance....  that's a LOT of windage...  lol.

for some of you ballistic geeks out there, ryan had this reflection with his stuff:

44 degrees F
56% humidity
29.05 absolute pressure
.300 WIN MAG (In Accuracy International AX Chassis) with Schmidt & Bender 5-25 scope, shooting Black Hills 190gr SMK at 3013 FPS

My mount has 10MOA.  Kind of surprised that Mega didn't do 10MOA or something with their receiver set.

I just checked and I run out of elevation in the turret at 20.7 mils.  The G2 reticle isn't terrible to hold with for elevation though, I haven't used it but it's nice to know its there.

yeah, having 10MOA extra isn't much...  if you have some short scope with no elevation travel internally, 10moa is the ticket.  but for doing what we did saturday, you really benefit from a scope with plenty of elevation so you can utilize 20 to 30moa built in the rings/rail/riser, and still have ability to start from a 100yard zero.
