I'd be working in downtown DSM, assuming I get the job.

Can you guys tell me what neighborhoods suck, what are nice neighborhoods, what are the best schools, that sort of thing?

I can probably handle a 30-40 minute commute.  Far less would be preferable.  Or better yet, one of you guys to drive me in the morning so I can read the paper and drink my coffee.

UPDATE:

I got an offer, and accepted it.  I start on the 19th.  Now to find a place to live...  Looks like my wife and son will stay here, probably until we find the right house to buy, while I'll rent something.

There are pockets of unincorporated neighborhoods around the metro if that's your thing. You can burn leaves and park a school bus in your yard.

Des Moines public schools are bad. West des Moines schools are pretty good. Ankeny high school has an active trap team and is also a good school.

I live by the Beaverdale area. Seems much nicer over there than where I'm at.

Only downside to where I live is it's right by the Hy Vee on University, so I see some sketchy people from time to time who have nothing better to do while waiting for the bus than wander the neighborhood all tweaked out. Actually watched a guy get into an argument with a tree in the yard next to my building the other night.

I grew up on the west side (42nd & Uni) so I'm somewhat partial to that area myself.  So help me I will scratch, claw and bite my way back there from this shit hole they call Highland Park.  Stay away from the north side.  Stay far far away...

It really depends what part of Des Moines the job is. When I worked on the capital complex it took me 25 min to get there from Huxley. There are plenty of good towns and neighborhoods, many more than bad, just make a list of what you want and find a good fit.

First question; What's your budget, buying or renting?

If you want a fairly good school system and a rural home, move to the Runnells area.

I live in Ankeny and the schools suck.

We open enrolled our kid to Johnston....

I'd say Johnston is a nice community to live in too.

lived on the south side, downtown twice, beaverdale, ankeny, polk city, altoona, clive, and urbandale...

i settled out of town and over the county line into jasper county for tax and gov purposes.  my taxes on 40acres and all my property is under $2K.  similar property we looked at in story and polk county was $4800 to $5500 annually.  food for thought.

i like the places like bondurant, altoona, ankeny, johnston, grimes, norwalk, and the like for great outer communities with quick and reasonable access to the city.  my wife drives downtown for work and makes it to the courthouse in 35 to 40min from our place with good weather and average morning traffic.

i've withdrawn from 'city' life over the years, so i'm happier in a smaller community an simply driving into the city when i want to...  so if i was going to live in 'town' i'd probably do the bondurant or grimes thing...

hope this helps.  best of luck and kudos on the new gig...

I seem to recall a similar hearing as much in a thread a while back...

I've been out of DM public schools for 10 years now but I didn't think they were so bad.  However that was 10 years ago...just look up all the shit that happened at Roosevelt in '03-'04.  Construction vehicles stolen and parked on the front lawn, band trailer stolen, more construction equipment rammed into the front of the building, and finally the bomb squad was called in to dispose of improperly stores chemicals in a science classroom.  Good 'ol TRHS class of 2004...

After living in Chicago there is not a single part of this city that would have me nervous to walk in.

The schools are okay in DM, if you plan on having the schools raise your kids then yes look at the suburbs as they are geared more toward that type of attention. No offense intended here to anyone. I just see the shift of parents wanting to drop their kids at school and then pick them up with little to no involvment in their kids education. Yes there are issues but not to the point of it being a subpar education. But I digress.

Overall the city is just that a city, there are tons of issues ranging from your nieghbors to the corrupt city council.

As said there is no where in the city that you should be unable to make in a 45 minute commute including most of the immediate suburbs. Our rush hour is a joke since that is about as long as it lasts, an hour.

Your budget is the biggest factor here. Are you planning on renting or looking to buy?

Highland park is far from a shit hole. It is older homes and there are plenty of nice neighborhoods.

Personally I think the 42nd and university area is far from perfect. Many have the idea that the trash stays to the east of Drake. Sadly there is no magic line that they refuse to cross over. The last few years the riff raff has been making a march to the west following in the foot steps of all those moving even farther west to get away from them.

I was in the class of 06. My senior year the school was in the news every week for something. One guy got attacked with a samurai sword in the parking lot. I don't know if they still have race battles at Hoover or not. But at least they traveled away for those.

The educators are good. But I never embraced the thug life.

Lived in the metro for about ten years, back in the 80's.  I never liked it.  For some reason it never felt like home, it was just a place to live.  Had some nice restaurants, some decent shops (but virtually no gun shops), but otherwise was just kind of meh.  Des Moines metro always had delusions of adequacy.

Been in Ames since 93.  I like college towns.

Lots of good advice so far.

Lessons learned in the last decade in DSM:
- A 4x4 helps in the winter
- Commute-wise, living east is usually the fastest, followed by north and south, west is the worst direction (but still not too bad)
- City of DSM is always broke and provides hit-or-miss services
- If you are in Des Moines schools and you can pay your kid's lunch bill, you'd be about the only one
- Housing quality and cost is pretty good but desirable houses in nice neighborhoods turn over fairly fast; summer is the hot time for home sales

I know the taxes there suck cock, but it is what it is.  I know that going into it - obviously it will be part of the budget.  I'd prefer to stay under 1k/month (including insurance and taxes) - cheaper is always better.  Could go over, if really needed, but I don't think we will need to.  Definitely would prefer to buy.  Renting is not really an option.  If we can't get a decent place, looks like I'll be sleeping on couches for a while.    No offer yet, but its looking good.

^^ Thanks.

I've spent a tiny amount of time in Beaverdale, and it seemed like a decent neighborhood.

But I just looked through a past issue of the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association's newsletter - holy fuck they seem like a bunch of fucking hipsters.  I don't think I'd fit in all that well.  Maybe I'm wrong though.

For the most part Beaverdale is older folks, young families and hipsters. Depends on where you land within the area. My wifes best friend lives over there and she has an older couple on one side and a family of four on the other. All around a quite neghborhood.

i lived on 36th and hickman in beaverdale and it was quite full of hipsters.  didn't really bother me much, but unfortunately, i was also about eight blocks from the edge of ghetto dsm...  our shit got stolen routinely right off the front porch.

not a big beaverdale fan anymore.  it is fine, but there are much better choices and to be honest i'm having a hard time biting off polk county in general.  story is just as bad, with dallas on the way.  jasper and warren are a couple that aren't half bad overall.

Before they started importing Chicago there were no "sketchy" parts of town.
L-way didn't have pawn shops and payday loan places.....

There's been a pawn shop on L way since at least 93, when I moved here.  The "Chicago" people have always been here, they just weren't as visable.  They've moved from the eastside (by the water plant) to the west side.  They'll get moved out of there eventually.  Iowa CIty has been playing that game for decades.  Despite the 'no growth" fudds Ames has experienced a fair amount of development in recent years.  The university is growing rapidly.  It may not be the same Ames of 20 year ago, but we're doing just fine.

Des Moines taxes are crazy high.  Suburbs are usually quite a bit less and taxes in unincorporated areas are the cheapest.  Jasper County will be less then Polk by quite a bit.

The problem will be your $1000 dollar range.  That can get you a house inside Des Moines, however most of the suburbs are going to be higher then that.  School district will play into that as well.  I know in Pleasant Hill, east of Des Moines, a house in the Southeast Polk district commands a higher price then the Des Moines district.  As far as schools go, you will always here people go one way or the other.  I went to East in Des Moines and I loved it.  It was a fantastic school and there were all kinds of opportunities for students.  You add the Central Campus into that and offerings are even greater.  I have 3 kids, two go to Catholic School and one goes to public school.  Catholic schools in Des Moines are fantastic and I send two kids there for less then one in daycare cost.  There are other schools such as Grandview Park Baptist and Ankeny Christian Academy, however they are about double the cost per student.

The west side of the metro is way ahead of the east side in commercial offerings, however the east side is starting to run.  Between Ankeny and Altoona, you have almost anything you can get on the west side and they are going to be opening up a giant retail center in Altoona, a SAMS club in Ankeny, and an indoor shooting range in Pleasant Hill.  Prices will be cheaper east and as stated earlier, your commute is better as well.  University in Pleasant Hill in the morning is pretty busy, however there getting ready to start work and complete an expressway from Pleasant Hill to Downtown from the Bypass and Vandalia area.

Norwalk or Warren county in general may not be a bad area to look at.  The commute isn't bad and the furthest north east from there is only going to be a 25-30 minute drive.

I'm on the south side of DSM, and will eventually escape.  I suggest staying out of DSM/Polk County.

Also, PM sent.

I know nothing about housing I live right across from the Bucks arena for two years. There are decent houses around here some for sale I deliver flyers for my grandpa's homeowner's association its pretty quiet.

I hear Dowling is a good catholic school, personally I agree with septic and to go live in one of outskirts cheaper and a close enough drive: winterset, van meter, adel, polk city, bondurant, altoona, indianola are very close and are probably easier on the wallet

Heh. This thread brings back memories. I know both the guy who rammed Roosevelt with the construction equipment AND the guy who slashed the other dude with the samurai sword.

Apartments above the shops on the SE corner?

I'm right in the middle of 42nd on the east side of the street between Cottage Grove and University.

Yep. My bedroom was the corner window overlooking the intersection. It was an awesome apartment.

Congratulations!  It will be nice to have a likeminded individual around.  You may want to consider joining the Iowa Firearms Coalition.  This fall we are going to need some help getting things changed in the state senate.

Heard about the sword incident but I'd graduated by then.  I never did hear who it was that rammed the building though, just that it was a disgruntled former student who lost a scholarship or something akin to that.
