Jon Lester just signed with the Cubs for 6/$155.

The expectation on Scherzer is 7/$185.

That is 1 year and $2.4ish mil/more the Dave already offered Max. Will they pay him?

Kind of makes me nervous. The Tigers don't need another aging pitcher making huge $$$$$!

Makes me nervous as well, but I want to win now also!

This will be Mr. I's call either way. I think they will sign him then trade Sanchez.

If they do win then they can blow it up like the A's did.

Remember not our money, doesn't have to make sense.

Cespides and Wilson for Porcello!!

Holy shit!!

Max is gone, Porcello is gone.
This wilson guy had a decent but limited 2013.

I dunno.
Cespides isn't what he was a couple seasons ago either.

Porcello was just starting to come into his own.

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, but this isn't a good trade on it's own merits.

I think we will be better for 2015. Cespedes has a ton of upside compared to Torii Hunter
and Porceello and Wilson are a wash.

The problem is what Porcello is going to become. Not sure I'd want to have to pay him after 2015 though.

ETA. Not sure about losing Suarez though??????

Cespedes is 25 home runs, 100 RBI and an arm like Gordon or Puig. Good pickup.

From a sabremetric standpoint, Rick and Cespedes are both 3 win players.

Bottom line, the Tigers will once again have the best offense in baseball. The rotation is weaker though.

But, the bullpen is an addition through subtraction. Coke and Joba are gone. Soria and Nathan just HAVE to be better, and Lobstein will take a spot.

I think the bullpen still needs two arms still.

Defensively, Gose/Davis and Cespedes improve the outfield. Iggy improves shortstop and 3B at the same time and Kinsler remains solid at second.

I don't see any major steps backwards.

The Offense last year was nothing but potential. All DD did was increase potential.
They fell flat on their faces for weeks at a time, and had us pulling handfulls of pubes if ya remember.
Stranded runners, zero production, stupid base running. LOTS of potential though.

I agree on needing the defense Cespides adds.
His arm is needed.
I still see it as a neutral to negative on losing Rick.
Porcello is going to be a monster in the next couple of seasons, and that means he would have kept the Pen from blowing more games.
If DD gets the Pen to resemble an actual professional baseball bullpen, it's neutral, if not, we are going to be missing Rick pretty bad.

Still no word on Iggy, and LOTs of chatter about sending Avila down the river.
This ain't over yet, and max leaving means DD has some Mad money to play with...if daddy will let Alex play in someone elses club.

They were the best all around offense in baseball last year. 2nd in runs, first in 2B, Avg and OBP, second in SLG and OPS. Every team has it's ups and downs, as this team will this year. This offense is better than last years'. Cespedes is a better hitter than Torii and better defensively, so it's an all around upgrade.

I definitely want to see better relievers, but we did get one back from Boston so.

http://www.freep.com/story/money/business/michigan/2014/12/15/tiger-stadium-development-deal/20466685/

The City of Detroit is to announce Tuesday that it has selected Larson Realty Group to redevelop the Tiger Stadium site, choosing a proposal that will not only preserve the historic playing field, but add residential and commercial space.

Two local developers, Roxbury Group of Detroit, and the Larson Realty Group of Bloomfield Hills, responded to the city's March request for proposals with plans for a mixed-use development including retail and residential space, but multiple sources told the Free Press that Larson had been selected.

Larson's plan calls for smaller retail along Michigan Avenue, as well as a mix of for-rent and for-sale housing.

I believe this is were the Tigers stand right now:

IN
OF Yoenis Cespedes (trade with BOS)
RHP Alfredo Simon (trade with CIN)
LHP Gage Speier (trade with BOS)
RHP Alex Wilson (trade with BOS)
DH Victor Martinez (FA)
OF Anthony Gose (trade with TOR)
RHP Shane Greene (trade WITH NYY)

OUT
RHP Jonathan Crawford (traded to CIN)
RHP Melvin Mercedes (designated for assignment)
RHP Rick Porcello (traded to BOS)
SS Eugenio Suarez (traded to CIN)
OF Torii Hunter (FA signed by MIN)
OF Andy Dirks (waiver claim by TOR)
LHP Pay McCoy (waiver claim by BAL)
2B Devon Travis (traded to TOR)
2B Domingo Leyba (traded to ARI)
LHP Robbie Ray (traded to (ARI)

And the standout, Max Scherzer (FA).  Doubt we'll sign him.  Rumor is he's looking for $200+ mill contract.

Looks like we signed Tom Gorzelanny from the Braves. Limited work last year, only 21 innings back from shoulder surgery, but a 0.86 ERA and a lefty.

The cut Putkonen to make room.

ETA:I guess he played for Milwaukee last year.

3 more months.......

I'm going stir crazy with this shit.

I watched "Moneyball" for the 87th time last night, and have gone through Ken burns "Baseball" for like the 5th time now.

At this point, I'd probably get into mexican Winter league games if they were broadcast.

Anyone heard anything on Iggy?

Iggy is doing everything except running on hard ground. Apparently he's running on a special treadmill that is designed to reduce the shock on the legs.

Taking the cautious approach with stress fractures is a good thing.
Plenty of time to recover fully means fewer re-injurys later.

I just hope he's been camped out in the batting cage.
The kid can lose a little on his fielding ability and still be hot shit.

What are the options though? You gotta understand that relief pitching is always a sought after commodity in the MLB and many teams will be bidding on the guy. Plus, free agency only has a few guys at a time that are available. If Dombrowski could get some rock solid guys for the bullpen that were available, I think he'd go after them.

They say this surgery has a 4-6 week recovery but could be longer due to his age. He'll miss all of a Spring Training at a minimum. Until we know more it's hard to speculate, but he could be back by May.

4-5 weeks if the doc can wrangle the cartilage. Longer if the Ligament is hosed.
I figure 8-10 weeks in real time. V-Mart wasn't moving real well to begin with.

Viceado is available....

At this point, the Pen is still a clusterfuck, Miggy is out for the first month or so, and now V-Mart.
Things are NOT looking good at this point.

DD is a complete Idiot. Let's see what he does in the next week or so.
We need a hard hitting GP player that can cover first, and the Pen patched up.
Miggy might be out for the first half..let's be realistic.

We don't know tha Miggy is out for a month or how long Vmart will be out. Acquiring Tank might not be bad, but he's no replacement for Miggy or Vmart.

Let's wait and see what the doctors say next week. We still have JD Mart and Cespedes, and that alone is a strong lineup.

The long slow death.....

I think the Tigers fleeting glory days are over. Martinez is ALWAYS hurt, and Cabby is becoming the same way. You have 3 massive contracts that will go deep into their years of being too old for the game. And the Tigers aren't the Yankees, so they can't just buy their way out it.

Nobody is going to trade for these guys. The Central division rivals are improving and more talented every year.

So I must sadly assume that 2006 and 2013 will be years that will haunt us Tiger fans. those situations are rare and very seldom come again.

Don't be too optimistic. People were calling into the local radio station who have had that exact surgery and they were saying, sure, they could work 4-6 weeks after, but they couldn't even do a full squad until like a year later. The knee probably won't be 100% for a long time.

6-8 weeks is realistic even with cortisone.

Bad habits picked up from hitting while on an injured knee are damn hard to shake.
It would be worth it to keep him off the thing for several of the first series of games.

He will be needed more so after the break when the crunch is on.

No, it really doesn't, and too many go that route to get back too soon after an injury.
I'm hoping he opts for a longer recovery, instead of chancing tearing things up and being out after the break.

Starting out in non impact  stuff, like batting and throwing and will begin a running progression until full-weight bearing is achieved.
