Hey guys, Im a Virginia native and I have to go to Port Huron for a month or so for work.   I have a Virginia CHP and Michigan has reciprocity with us, so I fully intend on carrying while Im there.

Does Michigan have any funny restrictions I should know about, as in capacity, ammo types, etc.? I carry a CZ75 PCR with 14 rd mags and hollow points.  I havent read anything about mag capacity limits or hollowpoint restrictions, but I wanted to verify here.

Also, are you required by law to notify an LEO if youre pulled over and youre carrying?  What about carrying in places that serve alcohol if you arent drinking?

No restrictions on ammo and mags.

Yes you have to notify Law Enforcement if your pulled over. MSP Link

You can not carry in these places:
Please refer to MCL 28.425o for the complete statutory text

1.Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian
2.Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.
3.Sports arena or stadium
4.A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises
5.Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official or officials allow concealed weapons
6.An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more
7.A hospital
8.A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university
9.A Casino
"Premises" does not include the parking areas of the places listed above.

Thank you, thats what I was looking for!

If you carry into a private business with posted "No guns allowed" signage in VA, all they can do is ask you to leave.  Failure to comply results in a trespass charge, but thats it.  Is it the same in MI, or do the signs carry more weight there?

if its just a run of the mill business (ie NOT one of the ones listed above) its the same as VA. ask u 2 leave and do so.

I will add that Michigan has state preemption.  A city, county, or any other local unit of government may NOT have any laws, rules, or ordnances stricter than state law.  So you only need to study state law.

This does NOT apply to knives though, so be mindful where you are.  At the state level though as long as you are not doing anything unlawful there are no knife laws except auto knives are illegal, but spring assist is fine.

Also effectively no CS, or CN is allowed, and pepper spray may not exceed 10%.  There also is no preemption on defensive sprays.

We have castle doctrine, but it sucks, basically all it does is remove the "duty to retreat".  If you are home (or in your case in your hotel room) you have full criminal, and civil immunity IF a "reasonable man" would have also taken the shot.  Basically it opens you up to Monday Morning Quarterbacking, you do theoretically have a legal presumption that if someone breaks in you can automatically assume they are there to harm you, but I wouldn't rely on it.  In public you have no duty to retreat, but that's about it, you have criminal immunity, but again only if the Monday Morning Quarterback concludes a "reasonable man" would have done what you did, however outside the home there is no civil protection.

You may NOT fire in defense of property.

Thats very helpful.  Im working on a USCG vessel, so I cant carry during the day, but I dont like being unarmed in the evenings, or while driving up there.

I was just in Maryland for a month, and their gun laws suck.  Entirely unconstitutional.  It seems like Michigan is much better.

The two biggest things for you will be to not carry in establishments that do the majority of their business selling acohol by the glass, and not carrying in an entertainment facility with seating for more than 2000. From a practical standpoint, if we avoid those two things in Michigan we are good to go.

Make sure you provide your permit with your drivers license if you get pulled over though, we have to disclose if we are carrying in a vehicle, and long guns may not be kept loaded in a vehicle.

I should mention, Michigan has a "zero" standard for alcohol while carrying concealed. It's against the law to have even a sip of alcohol when armed. I support this part of the law, the restricted areas not so much.
