I suppose that should give me hope of some sort, and be seen as a positive thing.

Nope. Ain't feeling it.
When they start playing crisp and dominant ball again, like they did in the spring, then maybe.

Last year, the Detroit Tigers traded for the Houston Astros’ closer, and made him their set-up man for the remainder of the season.

This year, they might pry another back-end arm away from the Astros.

The Tigers claimed Astros closer Chad Qualls off revocable waivers, according to several reports on Tuesday, and now have until Wednesday to hammer out a deal with the Houston club to secure his services.

It could take quite a bit.

Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow said as much last month, before the non-waiver deadline.

"I hesitate to use the word ‘untouchable,’ but he likes it here, he’s comfortable here and he’s pitching well,” general manager Jeff Luhnow told MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. "To have a guy who’s capable of pitching late in the game, in close games, we’re going to have opportunity going forward. This is a team that’s improving, and as the team improves, you have more save opportunities, more opportunities to pitch at the end of close games. We need more Chad Qualls. We don’t need less.”

A sinker/slider pitcher who turned 36 nine days ago, Qualls is having one of the best seasons of his 11-year career back where it started.

His strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.60) is at an all-time high, as he’s walked only five (two intentionally) in 44 innings. Qualls has a 3.07 ERA and a 1.159 WHIP, and has saved 14 in 17 chances. He had 15 holds as the Marlins’ set-up guy a year ago.

Like Jose Veras, the Astros closer the Tigers traded for last season, Qualls would be inexpensive, salary-wise. He’s due just the remainder of his $2.7M salary for this season, and $3M for next season. There’s a $3.5M team option for 2016, with a $250,000 buyout clause.

There’s obviously still a need in the Tigers’ bullpen for back-end arms.

After signing Joe Nathan (27 saves/six blown saves) and Joba Chamberlain in the offseason, the Tigers have followed the Boston Red Sox’s model for building a bullpen from last season, throwing potential (inexpensive) solution after solution at the issue.

They signed former Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan mid-season, hoping he could return to form after Tommy John surgery (he hasn’t been able to pitch yet), then added former Orioles and A’s closer Jim Johnson on a minor-league deal after he was released. They also traded a pair of high-level prospects to the Rangers for closer Joakim Soria, who has been on the disabled list.

As pertains to any team with a player claimed off revocable waivers, the Astros have three options: Make a deal with the Tigers, pull Qualls back off waivers and keep him, let the Tigers have him for nothing.

Good news if they can sign him.

And he replaces Coke.

Phillies want to off Papelbon too......

Well that just sucked the fun out of tonight's game.

Porcello is on a tear. He's found a groove and is staying in it.

HOLY CRAP!!
Miggy for a diving double play!

The defense is clicking, and seem to be serious about taking the extra effort all of a sudden.
I dunno what switch got thrown, but all of a sudden they are playing aggressive ball again.
I just hope it isn't too late.

Who is this ass clown sitting in for Mario?
Mario is bad enough, but this guy is worse somehow.
Makes me want to go to the barn and dig out the Radio earmuffs.

Coke shut the bats down. The worst Bullpen in Baseball history shut the Bats down.

The Yankees suck.
Price rates an ass kicking for not fessing up early that his stuff was fuzzy.
There's no room for his ego bullshit with the post season in doubt.

I realize Ausmus was cornered and didn't want to work the Pen, but damn.

How about Johnson though?
Dude showed some life and control he was known for.
Call me impressed, and hopeful.

'Nother thing.

We have a wet behind the ears Mudhen on the mound tomorrow, and the Pen will be limited.
Let's see if Romine has been working on his slider..

Price is the third Tigers' Cy Young winner to give up a career high in earned runs at home this season.

JV tied his career high against KC, Max set a new career high against KC and Price set a new career high against the Yankees.

Humph!

And what do all three have in common, besides a Catcher that should be in Toledo?

I disagree that Avila should be in Toledo. Defensively, in terms of pitch selection, framing, he's one of the best in the game.

Also, while he may not be a great hitter, he is considered to be a power threat by other teams. Avila isn't the problem.

No shit.

The two most maligned and obvious load stones had to pull it off.

I Missed the whole game and just saw the score on MIlive, so am watching the rebroadcast.

My point was, Jones...
He ties everything together and is the common point of all three Cy young winners, that are performing like crap.

Alex is another matter.

The no class bastards would intentionally lose just to screw the tigers over.

FOPs wonder why they are hated here, and the morons seem to think it's all about a football rivalry.
Never mind it's much older than that, and the bastards just keep giving new reasons.

Their play after the All Star Break was amazing in that they weren't THAT good. I think they'll be an 85ish win team, which means they have some losing to make up for.
