Hey folks,
My wife and I are heading down to the Clinton area on vacation next month.  As soon as our house sells we're relocating to the Knoxville area.  We took a look at Blount County on a previous visit.  This time it's Anderson County's turn.
Any recommendations for specific places to visit or avoid?  We went to AMSE at Oak Ridge on a previous trip. We'd also be up for a meet and greet with any TN hometown members in the area.
Our list of places to see (so far) is:
In Knoxville

Blount Mansion

Confederate
Memorial Hall

Crescent Bend (Armstrong-Lockett House) and Gardens

Great Valley Wine Trail

James White’s Fort

Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum

Market Square

McClung Museum

World’s Fair Park

In Clinton

Appalachian Arts Crafts Center

Dragon Leatherworks

Fighting Sheep Dog

Little Ponderosa Zoo

Museum of Appalachia

Norris Dam

S.E.T. Guns And Range

Around Knoxville

UT Arboretum

I know, too much for one week.
Thanks.

As for the Star of Knoxville riverboat, if you really need to see the Kuwahee Sewer Treatment plant, then go for it........ Seriously, it isn't much. I think your time would be better spent doing the other activities. Instead of that, go to Blount Mansion. It's pretty much next door to the Star of Knoxville and much more interesting. World's Fair Park isn't much either especially if there is not an event going on there.

Also, check on the hours of Crescent Bend. I don't think they are open to the public on a daily basis, but that needs to be verified.

Also, check out Confederate Memorial Hall, its on Kingston Pike near downtown.

OK, Star of Knoxville has been struck from the list and Blount Mansion and the Confederate Memorial Hall have been added.
Checked on Crescent Bend, their hours are  Wed - Fri 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Sat 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM so we should be good there.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I use the fighting sheepdog for transfers and small parts but it isn't a "vacation destination"

If you are going to be at the Museum of Appalachia, you may as well go to Norris dam.

The UT arborteum (near Oak Ridge) is more spacious than the botanical garden near campus.  There are easy hiking trails and a little scenery.

Little Ponderosa zoo is in Clinton http://www.littleponderosazoo.com

We may go to Norris Dam as well.  Depends on our itinerary for the day.  I'll add it to the list.

I like the name and try to stop in at local gun shops wherever I can.

I'll add the first two to the list.  I thought ORSA was a members only range?

ORSA is members only, but a few of us are members. Shoot me an IM if you have a few hours when you're in town and want to check it out.

Out Tennessee vacation is fast approaching.  Any other suggestions are welcome.

We're planning on dinners at both Sweet P's Downtown Dive and Dead End BBQ Knoxville while we're in town.  Anyone interested in meeting up?

Thanks.

If you have dates we can try and fire up the Knoxville meet and greet machine

Eat a Big Ed's in Oak Ridge.

Go to Hammer's.  Ain't been to Hammer's, ain't been to Clinton.

Norris Dam is a must, but damn son, see if you can get out on the lake.  Norris Lake is the most pristine lake in the region, with plenty of marinas to visit.  Stardust Marina is a great one with great food you can drive up to, and not too far away.  It'll get you used to the roads too.

The UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge is nice too.  If you want to hike a little more, look up Haw Ridge in the area.  It's got plenty of trails that are short.

You also might want to look up Kingston.  It's an up-and-coming town where everything pretty much centers around the river.  There's an old fort up on the hill they've restored and is pretty cool, and it has a much better river boat ride than Knoxville's.  More nature and you go by the fort.

We've been to Big Ed's and plan on going back.  Never heard of Hammers, so we'll take a look.  I don't know if we'll have time to go out on the lake this visit.  I'll look into Kingston.

Thanks.

Well, we made in to town last night and had dinner at Puleo's. Good prime rib.

Unfortunately, the AC in our car cut out on the drive in, so today's plan is to find a place to get that looked at.

We're still available to meet for dinner any night this week through Thursday.

After spending the day at one of Knoxville's beautiful car dealerships, my wife and I are enjoying dinner at Dead End BBQ.

Heading over to Pigeon Forge tomorrow.

We're around during the day on Thursday if you're available.  We don't have any firm plans for that day. Maybe the Museum of Appalachia or Norris Dam.  Tomorrow morning we're meeting our realtor to look at some houses. The afternoon may be open as well.

Let me know.

Where did you look?

We looked at a few houses in Oak Ridge, one in Clinton, and one in Rocky Top.

Stopped at the Fighting Sheep Dog. NICE people. I look forward to giving them lots of money once we move.

Headed off to Norris Dam State Park now.

Talked history with the nice young lady working Rice Mill and gift shop. Right when we got to Norris Dam itself, the skies opened up. Got back to the hotel and went across the street to Harrisons  for dinner.

Sitting in the hotel planning tomorrow's itinerary.

We're starting with the Museum of Appalachia followed by Chunky Monkey Ice Cream Shop. After that, Dragon Leatherworks, a few gun shops, and eventually Sweet P's Knoxville for dinner.

I'll update this thread during the day and anyone who's available and interested is welcome to join us at dinner.

The Museum of Appalachia was well worth the visit. We could have spent all day there. Wound up going to Chunky Monkey for lunch and again after dinner for ice cream. Dennis, the owner of Dragon Leatherworks turned out to be a fellow New York expat.  We spent about an hour chatting.  Stopped at a Kroger for travel supplies and ended up at Sweet P's Downtown for dinner. Loved the food but preferred the atmosphere of the original.

Till next time...
