So I just came back from meetings in Memphis the past couple of days, the roads are shit and it seems like they ran out of money to paint any lines on the roads everywhere.
I guess what made it worse was the almost 100 F degree heat I use to live in Nashville, went to Vanderbilt and the cities are like night and day I stayed around the Wolfchase area hotels, which was a little better. |

Well I'm glad you got that off your chest, hope you feel better now.

Careful. Somebody on here is sensitive and if you talk too bad about Mempho he'll whack your pee-pee.

Dats racist..... And it's East St Louis, but you know, might as well not worry about that when any pictures of blacks committing crimes works for the poster's aims. ETA: Though statistically accurate. ETA2: We have not seen anywhere NEAR the blight that Detroit has. We have plenty of crime, etc, but we're not quite there yet. |

Anyone with sense will be heading east on 72 anyway. Have you guys actually been to Detroit? I'm from Michigan and love the state, but Detroit is awful. Memphis is dirt cheap, has great suburbs, and easy commuting. Yep, there's crime, but before I moved here I didn't really think of Memphis as any worse than any other southern city. It's always interesting to watch the hate on this forum. |

Really? I love Kirby Woods/Shady Grove/North Massey. That's my little bubble I grew up in, and it's still great. Restaurants are phenomenal. The private schools are outstanding.
There are shitty parts, indeed. Stay away from them. The good parts are great. |

I find that a lot of the white Memphians are in denial. They live in Arlington, Gtown, C'ville, East Memphis, etc and turn a blind eye to the things that go on because they don't directly effect them at the moment. But that can go for anywhere. Memphis has quite a few issues but there are a lot of places in this state and country that have similar going ons. Nashville vs Memphis? Lol. Nashville is Memphis maybe 10 years ago. I'd say those areas are more conservative and know the score, and with the exception of East Memphis are outside the city and don't have to live with the clusterfuck that is the city council. Midtown is your bastion of liberal white guilt. I consider myself a reasonably progressive guy, and I like the restaurants, but no way would I live there. Out where I live there are lots of yards with Gadsden flags, and they still fly the rebel flag too. Imagine one of those in Overton Square (Midtown hipster area). Ha! No, you're more likely to see a rainbow flag. Memphis isn't quite the craphole outsiders proclaim it to be. One would've done very well to invest in midtown or downtown property a decade or so ago. Lot of money flowing into those places. |

I see him once a year and sometimes even that's too much. His type thrive in MidTown....and Nashville and other places in TN. If they vote, they vote for the people who give them free shit off the sweat of our labors. I was in Chattanooga a few weeks back. There are places there strikingly similar to Memphis. Same with Nashville. The whole Memphis/blow the 40 bridges shtick from the usual suspects gets old. |

Their nonsense is coming - and quickly too. I agree 100%. Memphis is far from a great city. It does have above average crime and very bad politics, but it is not as bad Detroit, Chicago or New Orleans. I visit those cities often. I live in one of those areas you listed, I dont know anyone that is in denial. We all use common sense: stay out of certain areas, plan our routes, most of us are armed (should be this way in any city), situational awareness, lock your car doors, etc. Most areas inside the loop are safe or are small enough you can just drive through. North and south of the loop has nothing to offer, no reason to go there. My 20yo daughter goes to U of M and has had no trouble with crime in 3 years. She drives all over Memphis. If a 110lb princess white girl can figure it out, then eastern TN boys can figure it out. The only difference between Memphis and the other cities of TN is the black population. Put on your big boy pants. And yes, the progressive cities east of us will soon have the day when the progressive growth and benefits will have to be paid for. I hope the best for those great cities, but it is coming. |

Crime in the city has gotten silly. In the past it was localized, and mostly criminal-on-criminal. Now it's everywhere and anyone is likely to be a victim at some point.
We are also seeing the downward spiral of city gov and the inevitable transition to a metro gov, for better or worse it's going to happen. |

Nashville will not be a thing like Memphis anytime soon. Memphis has the largest percentage of poverty in a city this size. Memphis is an island surrounded by suburban cities they cannot annex on two sides with Mississippi and Arkansas on the other two. Memphis is losing population and by the 2020 census Nashville will be larger. And yes section 8 does ruin neighborhoods. Wait for FBHO's new HUD rules that will require cities to build subsidized shit holes in upscale neighborhoods. Can you imagine FSA apartments next to Cool Springs Mall.
