I moved from CA to TN in 2005. I'm down near Chattanooga, so I can't help with your question, but I just wanted to welcome you.
People have been exceptionally kind since my move. There hasn't been any "Go back home" attitude, and the additional firearm freedom is certainly nice. So far the only real down side out here has been an utter lack of In-N-Out. |

John,
I live in Middle Tennessee (Nashville), so I'm not familiar with safe companies over that way. Just wanted to say "Welcome!" from a native Tennesseean. Good luck and enjoy! Tom |

Champion has an outlet off John Sevier Highway between Straw Plains Pike and Forks of the River Industrial Park. If you are coming from Asheville Hwy or Straw Plains towards Knoxville, it will be on your right. I think there is a GE marked building near or right in front of it. It's off the highway a bit. There is a small sign (would be on the left side of the road). I think Trebor Road/Lane/Drive. The best deals will be on a scratch and dent unit. Others are much closer to retail. Cash is king there. Ask for extras––pistol racks, light kits, etc. They will deliver for a price.
J Floyd's in front of Sevierville Home Depot (yes they are in a as station now) had quite a few before they moved. This might be a better option as it is closer. They are not universally known for helpfulness, friendliness, or general courtesy, though. Ass pro will occasionally have a sale on their safes. They had a nice Browning safe kit with lights, pistol rack and dehumidifier for around $25 several years back. There is also a retailer in Kingston or Oliver Springs. If you make this weekend's gunshow/flea market/beef jerky sale, they will probably be there. For shooting, Sevier Indoor Range is pretty nice, as is the Gatlinburg Sportsmans Club. Welcome to TN. |

I live 30 minutes north of Chattanooga. When I moved here, I used Southland Safes. They have a website and are based out of MS I believe, but will delivery and install at a reasonable price. I got a Summit Denali from him, he drove 4 hours to deliver and personally install, and it was still a thousand or so less than the retail guys around here wanted for the same safe. I highly recommend you give them a call.

Thank you, all!
I called the Champion safe folks and was able to secure a large safe at a medium price (plus they will deliver it this upcoming week). My girlfriend and I are flying out to arrange for a number of things and start the process of renouncing our California residency ( Thanks again for the advice. John |

John, if you are interested in shooting any rifle/pistol/shotgun competition look up ORSA (Oak Ridge Sportsmans Assn.) about an hours drive from Sevierville depending on traffic. We have a 1,000yd Highpower range as well as several other competition ranges and hold matches almost year round. CMP clinics are held as well to qualify for rifle purchases from the CMP store too. (I shoot Highpower mainly there)
PM me if you are interested in joining, the facilities are top notch and the ranges can be used for practice. ORSAs web site has links to each competitions sites with further info. Ron |

FJ-Thanks......I appreciate the offer for help, but I'm hiring a couple of guys through a company (this prevents any potential, future friends from hating me due to strained backs, etc). I will give you a shout when I get settled.
Ron-I started looking at the Oak Ridge web site (as well as the sites for a number of other ranges, from the one just north of Knoxville, to the indoor range in Sevierville and the one in Gatlinburg. I am tickled pink at the prospect of having what seem to be top-tier facilitlies available at reasonable cost, all withing a pretty short drive (comparing to the situtation in Calif). 10 days for the final big move. I am so tired of packing! |
