I posted this on in the general section then thought it might be useful to Utah folks in particular since it happened here at the South Town Expo Center during a Rocky Mnt. Gun Show:

A few months back some buddies and I went to the Rocky Mountain Gun show at the South Town Expo Center here in Utah. In the entrance area, before going inside, where was a large table set up with 10 tablet computers under a large banner that read "Enter Raffle to Win $2000 gift card from Cabelas!"

Since there was a Cabelas about 15 mins south of us off the freeway it seemed like a logical promotion.

Ever since we entered we have received harassing telemarketer/ phishing calls from this number: (385) 419-1682. This has gotten a lot of folks I know mad at Cabelas, But I am pretty sure this scam had nothing to do with them. The first time I got called, the guy on the other end said, " is this XXXX and did you enter a drawing at the gun show?" Which seemed a strange way to phrase things. So I started asking what company they were with -they went on to ask me questions including my wife's name and when he realized I wouldn't give up any personal info he said "this is not a time share". I kept asking what company he was with and eventually hung up when he would not answer. Now I get called every day a couple times from guys telling me they are with "Customer rewards program" or some such thing.

If someone knows a higher-up at Cabelas they might want to let them know their company's name is being appropriated by some sort of data-mining company. Google turns up people complaining about entering drawings at county fairs etc and this happening to them.

Oct 31 Rocky Mtn Gun show is back at the same location. I might have to go back and see if that "raffle" table gets set up again and have a word with whoever is running it.

I'll be there with a vendor/friend. We'll keep an eye out. People approach us about trades every show.

You honestly didn't know that your personal information is bought & sold?  Did you think that FACEBOOK was a public service corporation too?

Its not a SCAM its called TELEMARKETTING.  How the hell do you think they can afford to give away the ONE $2000 gift card?  They SELL all the info gathered to go onto CALL LISTS.  Which NEGATES ANY & ALL previous DO NOT CALL LISTING or ARRANGEMENTS you HAD in place.

Gambling is ILLEGAL in Utah, but businesses that prey upon the consumer are BIG BUSINESS in Utah!!

Hence all the PAYDAY LOAN centers, Pawn Shops and Tele-marketting businesses THRIVING in Utah.

Some folks are gullible & always seem to be getting fleeced by the aforementioned & pyramid schemes and get rich quick plans.

Sounds like LEARNING OCCURRED.  GOOD FOR YOU.

Wanna see something REALLY SCARY?  Look up what political groups benefit from through donations and are behind & profit from the payday loans, pawn shops and telemarketing!

At large events the host often gets companies to sponsor prizes for raffles. The Donator gets publicity and usually some other marketing perks. The Host gets award prizes. This is how a legit raffle usually works. You might be too young to know that.
They never gave away any gifts. They pretended to be Cabelas at the show, and pretended to be Cabelas on the phone. They intimated that I had won the $2000 raffle at the gun show while trying to get personal identity information out of me. I'm sure they walked a very narrow legal line- at best.  This was not telemarketing in any traditional sense.

Gambling, Pawnshops, pyramid schemes and their political supporters had nothing to do with my post. I know exactly what you are talking about, and I agree, but it had nothing to do with my post. However learning did occur. I learned that even in home town people can be dicks.
