I've always thought there were magazine capacity restrictions ffor hunting but can't find it In writing. Isn't it 3 shotgun shells or 5 rifle rounds? Or am I crazy?

I could be wrong but last I looked capacity wasn't regulated, but bullet type was, at least for rifle.

The Shotgun capacity 3rd limit is only for Federal Migratory birds, ducks, doves, etc. No capacity limit for quail chucker and rabbits or deer, etc.

There is not capacity limit on centerfire rifles in Utah.

This is true. I have a friend that is a Hunter Safety instructor and asked him.

I taught the State Big Game Hunting Laws for 7 weeks straight this summer, and went over the pamphlet daily.  I don't remember a single thing about capacity mentioned for rifles and big game hunting.

There is no caliber restriction for rifles listed for big game either, just has to be center fire, with an expanding bullet.

There is a caliber restriction for pistol hunting of big game, and it states that it must be .24 caliber or larger, with expanding bullets.  It also must have certain muzzle energy for certain game.

The only restriction on big game hunting that I'm aware of is that machine guns are not allowed.

There is no magazine capacity limit for rifles.

Correct.  You can use machineguns to hunt small game with, but not big game.  In Utah, mule deer are classed as big game, because they are rather large.

Magazine capacity was limited by manufacturers back in the 50-60's (?) by caliber on the older fudd guns. I think it had more to do with stock designs than anything else.  Magnum calibers were limited to three in the magazine.   Non magnum calibers were 5 rounds. With today's "systems" that is no longer true.

What is still true is........how many rounds does it take you to put your elk, deer, moose, antelope, bison etc on the ground?  The most I've ever hit an elk with was 3 (.270) but he was extremely close and really dead with the first one he just didn't know it.

I'm going to have an ethical problem with people who can't shoot and hit an animal properly but have high capacity magazines to make up for poor skills just cause they can.
