I will be visiting Delta, UT for work the first week of October.

I am excited, I have never been west of the Mississippi.

Hah, Delta is a nice, small, quaint town. If you have time drive up to the Utah County/Salt Lake County area.

Delta is a rockhound heaven. Lots of free/low cost minerals to hunt. Trilobites, topaz, snowflake obsidian deposits are all close by.

October is very pleasant; usually dry, with daytime highs in the upper 70s.

Lots of open desert. Lots of long range.

...and the reason I am going is the beryllium mine. It is not low cost.

Go a little further south to the gunstore/pawnshop in Fillmore. They are the ones that had the gattling gun on Pawn Stars. Neat store with cool stuff.

The Mexican food in Delta isn't bad either. Not much else exciting around there though...

Drive out to Lehman caves, just on the other side of the NV border in Great Basin National Park.

I lived and worked in Delta for 5 years. Lehman Caves is definitely worth seeing. It's about 100 miles west, on the Nevada border. Plenty of rock hounding, and ATV activities. Other than that, there's not a lot to see. We did a lot of coyote and jackrabbit hunting there.

Worth a trip. There are also some good trails to hike up along the peaks in the GBNP.

There is also Fish Springs Wildlife Refuge out west of Topaz Mountain... lots of birds out that way. Ponds in the middle of a huge desert... so its interesting to see.

As far as the mine goes... its in the middle of nowhere. I used to wander around a bit in the desert out that way, but it's been a few years. Tire plug/patch kit, pump, extra water, and food for any trips out in the desert out there... don't go unprepared.

I talked to a lady here in at work who was in Delta in March and the caves were still closed. She said to call and find out how late they stay open in the fall.

I'm in Delta. I brought my AR:

I won't be able to travel too far, but I am out here with a couple of guys who have been out here a bunch and hike every evening. We have a scheduled dinner tonight, but we'll get out Tues and Wed.

Am I correct that jack rabbits are varmints and you don't need a license for them?

Absolutely correct.

Coyotes, jack rabbits, striped skunk, and red fox are non-game animals, and you can shoot them every day of the year!!

No license, no bag limit, no nuthing.

You can shoot Eurasian (collared) Doves all year without a license as well. Might be tough with that stick though.

We went up to the Little Sahara this evening. I went out and tried to call in some coyotes, but no luck. I didn't know jackrabbits were nocturnal. I should have brought a different AR for the jackrabbits; one with an Acog and a light.

When I was in high school, it was legal to spotlight jackrabbits. You'll see 10:1 more rabbits at night than in the day. They're also dumb, in that they will run right toward the light.

That got changed some years ago and has never been seriously challenged.

Juab County used to have a spotlighting permit. Go to the Sheriff's Office, pay a small fee and they take down your info, then you would just call them and let them know when / where you were going to be shooting so they knew and would not send a Deputy on a wild goose chase. I heard they stopped doing that a few years ago though :-(

What's UT DNR's definition of spotlighting? Does that mean no night hunting at all, unless you have NV?

It has been a while since I checked into it, but I want to say most counties have a no firearms discharged after sunset ordinance that basically prevents any type of night hunting or shooting. Your best bet would be to call the Sheriff's office for which ever counties you want to shoot in and see what they have to say about night shooting or hunting.

I did a quick search, Juab County does not a website for the Sheriff and no way to search the code book. Pretty sure I remember hearing not too long ago that they did away with night shooting / hunting though.

Tooele County has a few things listed, and as far as I can tell you can get a permit to hunt jackrabbits at night with an air rifle only, and only for use in established research projects, but not during any big game season. Clear as mud huh?

I would try calling and asking for clarification though.

Tooele County Sheriff - (435) 843-3353

Juab County Sheriff - (435) 623-1344

Utah DWR - (801) 538-4700

Sorry I wasn't of more help or had better answers. Let us know what you find out.

From what I've read Briefly in the utah code, its illegal to use a said spotlight that is from a vehicle or attached in any way like mount or even power cord. Now talking to my wife's uncle who is UT county sheriff, he said to his understanding that is also true, but you can have a light on your rifle or person and be fine.
This is only for open game stuff like jackrabbits and noted above, coyotes, red fox etc. Now this may be Ut county only or not. Also Ut county just north of juab, where your in, has a shooting ban in affect so if you travel north watch county lines.

I killed a jack rabbit yesterday. Since everyone seems to be unsure about the rules, I'll plead the 5th on all of the details.

We are heading back to Salt Lake tonight. I have to say, everyone out here was very friendly and hospitable. I really enjoyed my trip.

Thanks

Glad to hear. Bunny blasting used to be more plentiful than it currently is. You can still find good areas every now and then that require a 12g.
Surprised you didn't see any jackalope though.....
